The best barbecue restaurants in Denver - Eater Denver

"A popular Idaho Springs establishment over the last 10 years, Smokin’ Yard’s also has become a go-to destination at its second location in the Baker neighborhood in Denver. Focused on Southern-style barbecue, this “meat and three” offers favorites like pulled pork, brisket, and burnt ends, plus all of the typical sides. Other notable offerings include the fried catfish, fried okra, and sloppy joes." - Rebecca Treon, Eater Staff, Nisa Sedaghat

Been on a BBQ kick lately so I had to give this place a try and it was DELISH! We got ribs, burnt ends, coleslaw and French fries and everything was amazing. The burnt ends had a super flavor crispness on the outside, but tender inside. The ribs were super tender. The coleslaw was creamy but not overly mayo-y and the fries were perfect crispy on the outside and soft in the middle with great seasoning. I wish I had tried the mac and cheese! Pro tip, if you like spicy, add some of the mango ghost pepper hot sauce to the BBQ sauce!!! 🔥🔥🔥😋😋😋

Having relocated from South Carolina, I appreciate this place very much. The sliced brisket and chopped brisket sandwiches were delicious. I was fortunate to get their last serving of burnt ends which are amazing! The catfish was also over the top. Sides were all good to very good. The Mac and cheese was somewhere between a good normal version and a full fledged SC baked dish - not the best but yummy. Several BBQ sauces along with hot sauces, pickles, onions and jalapeños are plentiful. Staff was attentive. Chairs inside were not very comfortable. Meal for 4 with water was $80 with a tip. Well worth it! Enjoy!

Google
First time stopping in and glad I did. The spicy and the bold BBQ sauces were definitely my favorite. The brisket was tender and the hot link had good favor. The fries were good, Mac and cheese was fine.... But overall great meal. Plus they have Diet Dr Pepper which is always a plus to me lol

Google
Good BBQ joint that was recommended by friends. We got the short ribs, fatty brisket, links and burnt ends. Overall BBQ was delicious. We’ll work the drive into Denver.

Google
I’ve spent my life on a quest for truly great BBQ across the US—usually ending in disappointment, an emptier wallet, and a side of regret. Not this time! Our first visit to Smokin’ Yard’s was Mother’s Day 2025, and it delivered the best BBQ we’ve ever had. Pulling into the car park, we spotted several trucks with Texas plates—evidence that this BBQ in Colorado is so good even Texans will drive up for it. Clearly, these folks know their barbecue. No snake oil here—these meats cure everything from depression to hanger. We dove in hard with the pulled chicken, brisket, and short ribs. Their sauces deserve their own psalm; mixing chipotle and bold was a true hymn to my taste buds. The sides are main-course material. My 7-year-old declared the mac & cheese the best she’s ever had (although mom’s homemade still takes gold). The mashed potatoes looked like twin scoops of comfort and joy—supernatural potatoes, I swear. Out front, a cheeky pig statue puffed on a cigar—perfect for photos without worrying it’d hog the spotlight. If Moses had known about BBQ this miraculous when God sent quail in the desert, he might’ve etched a second set of commandments to include: “Thou shalt feast at Smokin’ Yard’s.” —Moses-approved!

Google
Top tier BBQ spot! It's definitely now my top choice for BBQ! Nothing was dry. Everything was well seasoned, smoked, tender, and flavorful. The atmosphere was clean, inviting with a mix of blues and country. The service was also great with the staff consistently checking and refilling drinks.

Google
For the past 4 years, I’ve been traveling around Colorado trying and reviewing BBQ restraunts, and Smokin Yard is easily my most highly recommended spot being based in Boulder. I was extremely excited to try it, so I gathered up some friends and we made the trek down to lower Denver to try the highly acclaimed BBQ joint. The service definitely felt rushed and they were moving around quickly, but everyone we interacted was nice as a peach. No complaints on quality of service. When it comes to the food, I was definitely pretty disappointed in the quality of the meat. You couldn’t really taste any sort of smoke, the meat was textureless, and to be honest entirely tasteless unless you smothered it in one of their BBQ sauces. Their BBQ sauces all tasted nearly identical to me, just different levels of heat, something I’d never encountered before. The drinks were hefty and the unsweet tea was great, but I did think it was odd they had to refill it for you so you’d often be out of tea for a few minutes while eating. The sides were again tasteless, seasoned with nothing but salt. The sweet potato fries an excellent sample of nothing but a saltless mush. Overall, we all averaged our ratings to a 6.5/10.

Google
Great brisket sandwiches for a reasonable price. The portions were large for the price. Unfortunately, they were sold out of the burnt ends, so I didn't get to try them. One thing that is puzzling is why don't they serve meat by the lb like most bbq places? The brisket was great, and I liked that there were different types of sauces to try.

Yelp
After coming here for years I'm happy to say the food still tastes amazing and the staff is very friendly! Both of the locations are great but the Denver one is my favorite. With a huge parking lot bring the whole family! (They do have online ordering system and it works pretty well) After trying almost the whole menu I do highly recommend sloppy Joe's and the baby back ribs. The Mac and cheese is pretty solid on flavor and the fries have a bit of Cajun seasoning on them. Pro tip as for the sauce that they have in the back that's not on every table. They got a pretty cute outdoor patio area and plenty of rustic Colorado mountain theme ambiance inside.

Yelp
Holy crap.... Randomly stopped in here for a quick bite while my girlfriend was at work (she's vegan) -_- . The burnt end brisket just blew my mind it was so good with their mustard. Awesome place to bring the family for friends from the looks of it, lots of seating. I'll be back. Well done.

Yelp
Amazing BBQ beef. It reminded me of some of the excellent barbecue meats restaurants that can be found in Austin, Texas. Portions were very generous, moderately priced, and it's always nice to be offered a side of potato salad. Potato salad is not found as a side in many restaurants but sure goes well with barbecue meats. The restaurant is located in a warehouse District off of 1st and Santa Fe Blvd. and the buildings appear to be made of mostly sheet metal. As to service, you stand in line, order at a counter and staff brings you your food. The interior is very functional and is clean. There is lots of seating. The near to last words should be, you need to come for the food and not worry about the ambience. Yes, you can find ladies among the crowd. It will be worth your while.

Yelp
I was super surprised in all the best ways with this restaurant. Don't let the parking lot scare you away. It seems almost deserted and in the middle of nowhere. But walking inside the vibe immediately changed. It was lively, good patio, super friendly, and great service! I got the pulled pork and potato salad and it was super filling. The potato salad was flavorful and the pulled pork was tender and the right amount of juiciness. You order at the counter and service is great. A couple different bbq sauces to choose from as well. Will definitely Be back to try more off the menu.

Yelp
My favorite meat was the pulled pork. It was soft, tender, and so easy to eat. The sides tasted perfect, the Mac and cheese was cheesy and not watered down. The creamed corn was sweet and refreshing. The fried okra was perfect replacement for friend pickles. There was a line out the door when we came around noon on a Wednesday. There's plenty of seats available and they serve alcohol! Plenty of parking in the plaza. It's clean inside and a bit crammed, but it works well with enough space for everyone.

Yelp
Just as I had given up hope on finding good bbq in Colorado, this place came to change my mind. We tried the ribs, burnt ends, and chopped brisket with fried pickles, creamed corn, and potato salad. I have 0 complaints about any of these items other than the burnt ends being a little more fatty than I prefer. But the bbq sauce was delicious, everything was worth the wait. It did take a little bit to get our order but otherwise everything was great. Restaurant was clean, had a great selection of beers. Staff was friendly :) will definitely be returning!

Yelp
Ambiance: Nice country style BBQ restaurant with a bar inside. Service: ordering desk with friendly service and very fast as well Food: the food was what you expect. The fried okra was delicious with a good batter and perfect fry. Standout was the ribs from the 3 meats (we got baby back ribs). The sauces were tangy and sweet perfectly matching the meats.
google avatar

Frantsy R.

Yelp
Bleh! Terrible I guess this was brisket it was tough over sauced shredded beef on an odd roll. The potato salad was equally unappealing. The sandwich roll was tough the meat just over sauced and nothing great. Definitely will not be back

Ira P.

Yelp
The food is outstanding, the service is excellent, and they provide veteran discounts

Yelp
A little hard to find at the end of an industrial feel retail strip mall but once you walk in, the waft of slow cook BBQ is unmistakable. Theres a nice array of condiments at each table, including spicy chipotle, ketchup, pepperoncinis, "cow" sweet bbq sauce and "swine" bold bbq sauce. I ordered the Half rack baby back ribs. Honestly too dry on the ends and the tops - enter the sauce. Nothing is too spicy, even the ghost pepper bottles up by the counter. Beef brisket - more tender than the ribs even though it looks well done. Southern style green beans - mushy, like from a can Cole slaw - pretty crisp and regular. What you'd expect. Smoked baked beans - slightly sweet and hard to stop eating. I like the vibe and decor and you can see them smoking the meat from behind a window. That's all...

Yelp
Off the beaten path, across the train tracks and through an industrial park, but with the drive. It's a casual spot and we were there on a Monday for lunch so it was pretty quiet. Staff was attentive and the sampler was pretty good. The pulled pork with sweet was my favorite.

Jennifer K.

Yelp
This is the place! We've been coming here regularly since discovering it nearly five years ago, and it never disappoints. Every visit is consistently excellent from the quality of the food to the generous portions and attentive service. We've enjoyed just about everything on the menu: brisket, ribs, chicken, hot link, prime rib, sloppy joe, and even their smoked turkey, which has become a beloved Thanksgiving tradition for our family. Everything is perfectly smoked, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, and the owner is often there working right alongside the team, which speaks volumes about their dedication. Support this amazing local business you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Yum. Have eaten at both locations and the people are friendly, the founding brothers always on-site, and the food is perfect. Love the brisket, ribs, burnt ends. Delicious. Love it.

Tony K.

Yelp
Went for the Monday AYCE St Louis Ribs special....great decision. The ribs were meaty with great taste and flavor. The sides were delicious and plentiful. I had the seasonal house red chili (with chopped beef), green beans (my fav), and fried okra. To top it off, staff were super friendly and attentive. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
For many of us who grew up in Colorado, barbecue is hamburgers and hotdogs. Finding good southern bbq is a rare treat. So, funding Smokin Yard's bbq is a real treat. The green beans melted on my tongue, the fried okra was perfect and the special "Kobe beef brisket" couldn't have been more delicious. If you're in the neighborhood, I highly recommend this place!

Paige W.

Yelp
Such great service and the best BBQ in the city! The burnt ends were incredible! A great value for how much food you get.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
Great customer service with really good food. Smokin Yards didn't let us down. The Brisket was tender and flavorful The Fries and wings were delicious Wifey said the Carolina Pulled pork was on point (obviously I didn't get to try) she ate it all. Only let down for me was the Potato salad just your basic potato salad was expecting more and was let down. We will be back again.

Michele B.

Yelp
The food here is so good. I'm still dreaming about it. Wasn't too long of a wait, and lots of seating.
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
everything was wonderful we loved all the bbq sauces the service was great it's small but quaint the food was amazing the okra was the boom cooked perfectly the best I've had
google avatar

Yelp
Love these guys! First time at there Denver location! Welcomed immediately, very clean and nice layout of their restaurant. The food was delicious as usual. They unfortunately stopped making collard greens, but they started making smoked green bean the same way and they were delicious! They have a full bar and many drink options. Boiled peanuts are not free anymore, but you can order them. The brisket was tender and the smoked sausage was juicy. Definitely a great lunch spot! Great for families and large groups too. Outdoor patio available.
google avatar

Yelp
Just getting around to making a review. The brisket was fantastic and ribs were perfectly seasoned. Service was fast, friendly and helpful. Will make it a point to come back
google avatar

Yelp
Had their All You Can Eat Rib option. Was not planning to stop by a BBQ in Denver but it was the closest thing to us. It wasn't the best bbq like you would imagine but it did the job.

Dan W.

Yelp
Some of the best tasting meats in Denver, it also little difficult to get there but worth it.

Brian M.

Yelp
I've been to smokin' yards 3 times now. I want to try more of the menu, but I keep coming back to the smoked wings and St. Louis ribs. For BBQ, the pricing is appropriate. The staff are ALL super friendly and welcoming. The beers on tap are great and the restaurant is comfortable. I do however have one little complaint... there's no blue cheese to go with the wings! It might sound silly but, as high quality as their wings are, I'm actually surprised blue cheese isn't on the menu. One of the staff members told me they do all their sauces in house (all of the sauces I've tried are great) but, if they added some homemade blue cheese to the menu, that'd pair perfectly with the wings. Overall, I highly recommend this spot.

Diamond F.

Yelp
This is usually my go to place for BBQ but this visit was disappointing. I ordered my usual order which consisted of a 1/2 chicken. The chicken was under cooked so I sent it back and asked it if I could get it cooked all the way, a guy to my order and came back in less than a minute with the same undercooked chicken.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Still my favorite rib joint in Denver. The place was busy. Service was great. Great flavor, char and tender ribs. Excellent sides. You get two, but can change with reorder when getting the AYCE special. I always get the seasonal chili and either spicy coleslaw or southern green beans. Fried okra is good too. I recently had brisket for lunch. That was tender and moist with great smoked flavor.
google avatar

Walter P.

Yelp
Food is so so so good! Absolutely delicious. Service is amazing. Never been here before. Came highly recommended by our friends. Definitely glad to come here. So yummy. For real. Recommend this place for sure.
google avatar

Richard G.

Yelp
Sadly to say my original review still stands. The ribs are just a bit to dry for me.
google avatar

Zach S.

Yelp
Great meats and super friendly service! Everything from burnt ends to the brisket to the chicken are great. They also have a well stocked list of sides, which is nice that you don't have to get the traditional sides of beans, mashed potatoes, fries or corn. They've got fantastic fried pickles, as well as okra.
google avatar

Fred T.

Yelp
This was suggested by my wife after we toured Stranahan's Whiskey Distillery not too far from here. It's not much to look at from the outside but the food is great! They have daily specials and on the day we went it was "all you can eat St Louis Ribs" which I ordered, it came with 2 sides too. The staff was very attentive and we had multiple people come around to make sure everything was right. I ended up have a 2nd round of ribs and both were delicious, very tend (fall off the bone) and nice smoked flavor. If I lived in the area I'd be back every weekday they had this daily special (I think it's Monday's).

Yelp
4.5 stars - one of the better BBQ places I've found in Denver! I shared a three-meat plate with chicken, sliced brisket, and ribs. Everything was really good! The chicken may have been my favorite. The spice blend they put on it was great! The regular BBQ sauce and mustard sauce were nice, but the mustard probably would have gone best with pulled pork. They have generous portions! The sides weren't as good as the meat. I got the baked beans (too much smoke flavor) and sweet potato fries (cold and under salted); I'd switch up the sides order next time. I got takeout and it was well packed and handed off with a smile. This is a solid choice for BBQ in the area! Thanks, Yelp, for helping me discover it!

Tracie L.

Yelp
Great bbq. Sketchy part of town if you have your bikes with you. We were able to get a spot up front and back up, then sat by the door, so we could see our rack. They were out of brisket by the time we arrived, so I can't speak to how good that was. The serving sizes were good and while I normally don't get St Louis style ribs, they said out of the two options those were more fall off the bone. All 3 meats I had were delicious and the ribs weren't fall off the bone, they definitely were tender. My friend got the sweet potato fries and they were really good. She had the catfish sandwich and said it was good. I would recommend trying here for good bbq.
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped in here a couple of weeks ago for dinner for the first time. You order at the counter when you walk in, and they give you a number sign, and you can choose where to sit, including at the bar. We chose to sit at the bar, it was nice, we had the bar to ourselves. Our beer came out very quickly, and our food came out fairly quickly after that. I had the ribs, brisket, and two sides - the coleslaw, and the Mac and cheese. Everything was very flavorful, my judge of good bbq is how good it tastes without bbq sauce; it tasted great without, and even better with it. The coleslaw was very good, and the mac and cheese was good as well. We will definitely be back to try more of the menu!
google avatar

Melinda C.

Yelp
Food and customer service was amazing. Really enjoyed the smoked barbecue. I had the pulled pork and beef brisket with mac & cheese and baked beans for sides. It was all tasty.

Saddie G.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years, yesterday 03/17 was the last time I'll be dining in. My husband and I both got severely sick with food poisoning after leaving here. Our meat was cold, our sides were cold and the bbq sauce tasted like it hasn't been rotated out of the bottles. I used to love this place but yesterdays service and experience has been by far the worst I've experienced
google avatar

Trae G.

Yelp
So far my favorite place in Denver to get barbecue. Meat is tender. What the flavor I had the pulled pork sandwich they grilled the bun, the sauce is light. so far I've had their sweet potato fries the regular fries and their fried okra. All are really good. Give this place a try you won't regret it.
google avatar

Danielle H.

Yelp
Hidden Gem! (If you check in on yelp you get 15% off) Some of the best BBQ that I had had in Denver. Definitely a hole in the wall as the area isn't a place you would expect good food. Plenty of parking! A few co workers convinced me to go and I was not disappointed. Everyone one truly enjoyed their food and it was well priced. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. Lots of sauces to try! The one meat plate and two sides was good for me but my hungry male coworkers said the two and three meet plate was the way to go. We did share food and it was all very tasty and a big plus is that they also have drinks! Keep in mind the is a very casual spot with TVs all around. 10/10
google avatar

Terry B.

Yelp
Great Ribs and side dishes, staff is helpful and friendly! I would go back the next time I'm in Denver
google avatar

Tony H.

Yelp
I heard of this place so I had to try it out. I wasn't too satisfied with the food. It had no flavor it just tastes like smoke. The ribs, the chili, the macaroni. And cheese It's like they just put the meat on the grill with no seasoning. But if it smoked meat, you're looking for you. Got it there. I doubt if I would ever go back.
google avatar

Krystal M.

Yelp
Was in Denver and on a whim decided to try this place out as we were in the mood for BBQ. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. We ordered a two meat plate which included ribs, and a half chicken with mac n cheese, creamed corn and fried okra. I wanted to love this place more as the staff was very friendly and checked on us often. However we felt like the food needed more seasoning in general. I don't like to put a lot of salt on my food. But the food just tasted much better with a little dash of salt. Also, the creamed corn was almost like they blended the corn, it was different, and the mac n cheese seemed like it was lacking something, perhaps seasoning.
google avatar

Gustavo F.

Yelp
Great barbecue!! Cool atmosphere, very casual and very good!! Highly recommend the brisket, but everything we ate was excellent!
google avatar

Denice R.

Yelp
I love well seasoned fries. I love good sandwich bread. I love burnt ends. I love a well-made coleslaw. Smokin' Yards BBQ has ALL of these things. I was heading to the airport and needed to get a meal, and was fresh out of places I wanted to eat. Here comes my good ol' sis with a recommendation for this place. Many BBQ restaurants don't serve burnt ends, so anytime I see it on the menu, I usually order it. Just so happens they had enough for one sandwich, which I split with my sister. We also split the smoked wings, coleslaw and fries. One bite into the burnt ends sandwich and I knew I made the right choice coming here and ordering this. The bread was soft, but had a slight crunch, while the burnt ends were flavorful and juicy. I added their BBQ sauce and all was right with the world. You can see the actual seasoning on the fries, and I didn't need ketchup to eat them. While the coleslaw was a great compliment to the rest of the meal. The smoked wings had a spicy kick to them. I would have loved them with blue cheese, but they only had ranch dressing. I probably should have ordered a burnt end sandwich to go, but I didn't. Guess that means I just have to stop back through when I'm back in Denver!

Omonn D.

Yelp
Just not good. Typical mediocre Colorado food. The ribs were super dry and the corned beef was too salty to actually eat.
google avatar

Kris L.

Yelp
Great food when they aren't out of everything. No pork, no beef and it wasn't even 7:00 on a Saturday.
google avatar

Shannon C.

Yelp
All the food was phenomenal. Everything tasted fresh & service is very attentive. The bbq sauces on the table were all so good. Sweet tea tastes authentic. Highly recommend if you're in the area.
google avatar

Amber H.

Yelp
Smokin' Yards BBQ is amazing! I love to get the half chicken with sides such as green beans or sweet potato fries which are a crispy delight! The hot wings are also ! They are thick, juicy and spicy. They also have boiled peanuts but they are usually a little undercooked so I've had to take them home to boil them longer on some occasions. They have a nice beer selection and a great unsweetened tea. This location is great because they have plenty of seating options compared to their Idaho Springs location. The staff are all so friendly and attentive too! 10/10!!

Monique S.

Yelp
my ribs where burnt very little and dry I would never go to this place ever again overpriced very sloppy. I would never suggest anyone to go to this place. and one cupcake, five dollars almost
google avatar

Gina K.

Yelp
The location is obscure but the food is delicious. I got the pulled pork and a side. I got mac and cheese it was fine but not the creamy cheese southern mac and cheese I was hoping for. The pulled pork and fried pickle chips were on point. There are three bbq sauce options that are already on the table so, you can try them all!
google avatar

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp. Decided to go because of the reviews, price and photos. This place did not fail at all. The service was amazing, nobody was doing only one job, they all were helping another, and very courteous. The food did not disappoint! It was all fresh and flavorful. I had the ribs and hot link combo. The meat was falling off the bone. I also had okra and macaroni, neither stood a chance. I didn't get to take a picture because it was so good. I had the opportunity to speak with the owner and he is very proud of his business. They were both tending try to customers as well. What a great example!! Definitely recommend.
