Where to Find the Best Birria Tacos Around Charleston - Eater Carolinas

"After trying birria tacos in Arizona, Micho co-owners Tina Heath-Schuttenberg and Dave Schuttenberg knew they needed to bring that flavor back to Charleston. Schuttenberg’s version is made with savory shredded lamb in a griddled Mitla tortilla. It’s served with a with a side of rich consomme filled with hominy, chopped onion, and herbs. The leftover bright-red broth is worth slurping. The tacos are so good that workers from a nearby Mexican restaurant have been spotted ordering them." - Erin Perkins

The Charleston Pour House is an awesome local venue for live music. Second time visiting since I moved here and we had a blast getting down to Check Your Head a Beastie Boys tribute band. The vibe was old school (so was the crowd Gen X represent!) and the energy was fantastic. Crazy good beer selection including local brews and bartenders are quick and keep the drinks flowing. Food is available, and while we didn’t indulge, I know the food is good from my previous visit. Outdoor area is nice to cool down and catch some air. There’s also music out there before the main event, which is a nice way to pregame. Looking forward to my next visit.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 FIVE STARS for The Charleston Pour House! What. A. Vibe. 🎶🔥 We had an amazing time at this venue — the atmosphere is right up our alley. Super chill, artsy, and full of great energy. Even though it was packed shoulder-to-shoulder, the crowd was friendly and respectful — just good people there to enjoy good music. 🎤 Badfish, Mitchell Ferguson, and Crooked Coast all absolutely crushed it — each one had the crowd hypnotized from start to finish. 💥🎸 🍻 The bartenders were quick, the food truck was on point (and fast!), and prices were more than fair. No complaints here — just great service, great sound, and great times. We’ll definitely be back for future shows. 👏💃 #CharlestonPourHouse #LiveMusicVibes #Badfish #MitchellFerguson #CrookedCoast #HolyCityNights #CHSevents #CharlestonMusicScene #SupportLocalVenues #GoodVibesOnly #PoHoMagic

Google
What a cool, fun place and the service was great. We went to see a Tom Petty cover band. Great band too.

Google
Came here to see the Dave Matthews Tribute Band, and we had a wonderful time! It has both indoor and outdoor stages, with an outdoor restaurant that serves really great Indian Curries and sandwiches. The food here was really good. There just isn't much room to sit down to eat. Definitely will be back.

Google
Good venue for live music in Charleston. 2 stages and bars. One is open air style.

Google
The Charleston Pour House has both indoor and outdoor stages which are both hidden from the road! As you drive past the venue, you would not know how large of a crowd can be accommodated! Parking can be difficult especially on busy nights with packed crowds but fans do their best to squeeze in-arrive before show time and you’ll be fine! Staff were all very friendly and drink prices were extremely reasonable! Many cover bands play at the Pour House and fans are often regulars. This is a great asset to Charleston!

Google
Wow! This was so much fun! Grateful dead tribute band was on fire! Great atmosphere, very casual, lots of cool details, nice outdoor area, this is a hidden gem of Charleston! I will come back just for this!

Google
We attended the "Poho night market" at the the Pour House and had a great time. The venue itself was awesome with a Live band, dance floor, bar and Pakistani food. There was an outdoor "market" which consisted of vendors that were lined up in rows selling crafts and other things. The crowd was varied, and included families with kids. The event we went to was free but I belive they charge for different events. Generally, It's a fun, casual spot for music lovers. Note that it is mostly outdoors so check the weather and enjoy!

Yelp
I visit this spot on occasion but the most recent event was over the weekend for a vendor night market. They make use of their outdoor space by the parking lot and had it filled with vendors. On the outdoor stage area it was slammed pack for live music. Their shows are always really good and later in the evening they had a ticketed show indoors. For dog owners, they no longer allow dogs on the back deck. I wouldn't recommend bringing you pup out to this location anymore since it defeats the purpose. This particular evening Jack of Cups had a pop up and so I snagged some curry Mac n cheese and their butter chicken. If you saw my last review of JOC, then you KNOW it was good. This is a great spot for locals to hang out and chill. The love music scene is always a vibe.

Yelp
Went to Charleston pour house earlier to listen to good music and hang out. It was my first time there and we had a blast. The staff was friendly, bathrooms were clean and there was a farmers market out back! I am looking forward to going back.

Yelp
I will note, I have only been here once but cannot wait to go back! I went on a Sunday to make it to 9:30am yoga class & check out the Farmer's Market. I LOVED the space and the setting! The yoga teacher was so nice, in fact everyone was welcoming and I feel like I fit right in. The staff was friendly. The farmer's market had a good selection of wares. I had to head out shortly before live music started, but I am really looking forward to getting back there in the near future for one of their live band nights! Loved all the artwork too!

Yelp
Great music venue. Service was outstanding pleasant and fast. I was attending a ticketed event so I was not there to eat. I did see a food window and some vending but I cannot say I spent enough time observing to make any legitimate determinations. I have no clue if they have a full kitchen or serve food by day. What I was impressed with was the open air concept and the ability to move from the stage area, to the bar and to the outdoor tables easily. Being from out of town, traveling alone, and generally a person that can get overwhelmed by crowds or noise occasionally, it was awesome to dip away from the band for a few minutes to get fresh air without having to exit and re-enter the venue. I was impressed that they had plenty of attentive and super friendly staff. Good vibes, good times, good music. I look forward to attending a ton more shows in the future and recommending field trips to friends.

Yelp
Good music, good people, and good drinks and food! If you're into light rock, folk, and bluegrass, this is your spot to groove! Tickets vary on who is playing that night. It's cash only. There is an outdoor and indoor stage. I've only been here when the outdoor stage is being played. My friends and I come here to listen to the Reckoning. Very spacious with plenty of room to dance and places to eat, drink, and sit. In the outdoor stage area, there's a small permanent(?) food truck called Root Notes and IT IS DELICIOUS!! I ordered their loaded fries. It has curry sauce poured over their crispy fries. You obviously have to eat fast before they get soggy, unless you like your fries drenched in curry (which still tastes great). My friends ordered their burgers, which they always rave about! I'll be sure to try these next time I go. There is also an outdoor bar. Drinks are relatively cheap (~$5).

Yelp
4.5 on all accounts. It's just a notch above a dive bar but an awesome experience all around. We went on Sunday during the Motown Throw Down and what a great time. This band is fantastic, the drinks are good, service at the walk up bar was good but the best part was the food both inside the Pour House and outside at the food trucks parked out back. Look at their website for ticket info. While this venue was free, many of the bands that play there require a ticket in advance. Worth the visit for both locals and tourists.

Trevor K.

Yelp
Fantastic all around. A true community watering hole. Great music, cheap drinks, + regularly hosting farmers markets
google avatar

Yelp
Sickest spot for a concert. I have attended shows both on the outdoor patio and inside the venue, and while both are incredible, I 100% prefer seeing bands on the patio. All of the art is sooooo cool to look at, and covers the entire venue. From the bathrooms to the fence to the walls to the stage, there are stunning murals everywhere. I love how many great beer and cider options they have, and that there are plenty of ice water jugs around. There's also a delicious food truck situation on the patio, though it's not always open. Loved the turmeric burger and fries. All around great vibes.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Put on your flip flops and welcome summer. This is the quintessential island easy with live music and bar. The outdoor patio houses changing bands and no cover charge, which justifies the slightly pricey beer prices. They also have a ticketed indoor stage. Consider bringing bug spray in the evening. Skip the over priced and poorly executed Chinese food offerings.

Yelp
There's nothing quite like the Pour House! You really haven't experienced this area unless you've been here. We came, we saw, we conquered and the Pour House is now on my list of must go to if ever in the area! We came to this joint after meeting a local who said while you're here you gotta go to The Pour House. We did and ended up meeting said local and all her friends. We danced, we drank and really had a good time. I'd call this slightly hippie and a hair hipster but steeped in a stench of Southern soul and funk as it's all about the music at the House. On this particular night, it was what they down South consider chilly so the band played indoors. It was packed. We enjoyed perusing around between the indoor and outdoor space. So much to see from art to people watching. This joint was a whole lot of fun! Plus we now have a Sothern friend to boot! Anytime we're in CHS we'll be coming here! It is a must! Pour House is rocking! Pictures say it all!

Yelp
Kind and attentive bar staff, good music, great small venue, and super groovy vibes. I saw the 502 here tonight and they were great! Sound and lights were good, drinks were pretty reasonable ($5 for my hard cider) and overall had a great time. Would definitely recommend coming to a concert here!

Yelp
Very cool atmosphere!!! We stopped here on our first night after arriving in Charleston for the first time. We heard (through Yelp) that this is a cool place for live music. We came in, but the music wasn't starting quite yet, so we grabbed a beer, then went next door for dinner, and went back. This was an "all ages" show, so there were parents with small children running around. The music style that particular night wasn't exactly something I enjoyed, but I can see the appeal of you are a big fan of live music.

Gianna B.

Yelp
The Sunday brunch with Motown is a must during your next trip to Charleston. They have lively music and an amazing farmers market every Sunday.
google avatar

Yelp
This is such a great venue. Live music inside and out on the back patio/porch area. They get some really cool bands and the cover is usually very reasonable. Beer selection is awesome. They have many local craft beers on tap and their cooler is stocked with some good canned options as well. Of course, they even have a tall boy listing of beers, including PBR. When you go at night to see a band inside, it is such a different experience/vibe from lounging out back under the oaks to watch a different band in the evening. It's really like a multi-plex on the down low. Something for everyone. They also have a semi-permanent food truck out back that you can order from when you get the munchies. Outside bar and bathrooms are also very convenient when you don't feel like going inside. They set-up those fancy heaters when it's cold out, and fans for when the days are hot! On Sundays, you should come out for the market. They always have multiple food trucks and vendors, and music provided for your pleasure. Picnic tables are available if you want to eat and socialize a bit. Check out their calendar and plan a date to try this place out if you haven't already. You'll be talking your friends into making the drive over too. It's an intimate setting, but so much fun.

Yelp
The Pour House is a Charleston institution and such a key piece of the James Island community. They have an indoor music venue, an outdoor deck with bar with a stage, they host a farmer's market and a night market, and a restaurant. This place has a lot going on! It's a very laid back, Folly Beach vibe. The artwork and vibe is Grateful Dead-esq, and it's a great place to go after a long day at the beach because nobody cares what you're wearing. The prices are on point for the rest of James Island, and there's usually parking around Pour House if spots aren't available in their lot, just be careful if you cross Maybank Highway. Everyone should experience the Pour House at least once. There really isn't anything like it in Charleston that I've seen.

Brooke B.

Yelp
Great music venue. Both bands we saw were great. Food truck has a great twist on Indian food and was tasty. Absolutely love this venue!

Yelp
We stopped here on our first night in Charleston. We purchased tickets to see The Reckoning with friends who lived nearby. As we walked up, it had a great vibe for a small concert venue. They seem to play all genres of music but mostly geared toward hippie/Grateful Dead music which is perfect for us! The first room we entered was very dark which opened up to an awesome back patio with a stage, ample seating and strung lights. The beverages were fairly priced and the bar staff were very attentive. I definitely recommend this place and wish I lived closer...
google avatar

Patricia S.

Yelp
We enjoyed the Allman Brothers Tribute Band very much. It was great to be at a live show. The Mexican food from the food truck was excellent. We loved the murals decorating the space.
google avatar

Wilhelmina L.

Yelp
Great little music venue with a quirky, hippie vibe! We've been meaning to get here for a long time, and finally made it out to see local reggae/rocksteady band Well Charged play the deck. The deck shows are outdoors on the... deck. Imagine that. There's a good sized bar out here, as well as bathrooms, and some random games tucked in the back corner. Smattering of tables and bar seats around, but largely the middle is open for you to dance and sway to the beats. I believe all deck shows are F-R-E-E, which is a killer deal in itself. The Pour House gets great bands from all over, so you're most likely in store for some awesome music. The deck is surrounded by a fence that has been given the mural treatment all over. Every few feet, a different mural starts, but it all feels connected with the theme of vibrant, bright colors. There is plenty for your eyeballs to feast on! The deck is dog friendly, though the area is wide open, so make sure your dog is very friendly with other dogs, people, and kiddos. There is technically no food at the Pour House, though there are options next door. There is also a food truck parked onsite, but they were not open during our visit. Prices seemed fairly inflated for food (they had a large chalkboarded menu on the side), but not surprising for a music venue. The bar itself was really reasonable, with a few good beers on tap. A big cup of craft beer and a massive cup of wine came out to $12, which we thought was on par with most other places in Charleston. Chill, kind of intimate vibe here. Definitely check it out!

Yelp
Had bad time and waste of money. Service is horrible and staff is rude to costumers.

Yelp
This night was 80's throwback night and what a crowd. The place was packed with 80's loving patrons and the drinks were flowing. Charleston Pour House is located on James Island and is not hard to get to. There is a lot of parking but I recommend using Uber because spaces fill fast and you end up having to park a ways away. The band was awesome this night. My only complaint is that is was hot has h-e-double hockey sticks. An escape to the patio was necessary every now and then because not enough air is pumping on to the floor. Drinks were good and prices were not too bad. Bartenders don't skimp on the alcohol and that's always a plus. That's my $.02 and I hope it helps in your decision making process.

Angela S.

Yelp
We were vacationing in Charleston for a few days and wanted to hear some live music. It seemed that there were only 2 places that offered any. We chose this location because of the great reviews we read and we were not disappointed. We had a BLAST! The bands scheduled were all great! The guy at the door checking ids and collecting payment was super friendly, as were the bartenders. The place was packed and we never had to wait for a drink. Great mix of people, too....all ages. Highly recommend!

Kathy C.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere! Great place to see talented musicians. Absolutely worth the trip! Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
If you like live music, please do yourself a favor and stop in here. Forget the lineup, because it doesn't matter. The environment is as entertaining and whoever might be on stage. Great people watching, great service. Walk in and instantly get accepted as a local. Loved it so much went two nights in a row. Thanks to the staff for making our weekend in Charleston very special.
google avatar

Yelp
The Charleston Pour House on Maybank Highway on James Island is a great place to catch live music and get some drinks in a laid back atmosphere. I have enjoyed just about every live event I have attended here as the venue is the perfect size to get a really good concert experience.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
One of the last great music venues on the planet! Two stages, excellent local, regional, and national touring acts, and some of the best staff and community anywhere! I've seen thousands of shows from bars to Madison square garden and Pour House is my favorite venue anywhere!
google avatar

Kailey M.

Yelp
Had an amazing time at the American Aquarium concert. The RootNote good truck they have on their patio is DELICIOUS and very cool patio atmosphere. Attentive bartenders and good service
google avatar

Rose F.

Yelp
What a great time we had here watching The Reckoning (Dead cover band)! There are some tables spread throughout, but it's mostly standing room...which was great as people had room to dance and/or sway. The service was quick and friendly. We would definitely go back if ever in Charleston again!
google avatar

Ross H.

Yelp
The talent and performance that's available every Sunday with Motown Throwdown on The Deck is phenomenal! We love the inside shows and the sound is amazing but you can't beat the great Sunday afternoons! We always see the same faces, such a great uplifting vibe!
google avatar

Panayota E.

Yelp
How the efff has it taken me so long to write a review for this place! It's literally my favorite place in Charleston!! If you love live music, good vibes, hanging out on a big beautiful deck outside with trees and huge murals with good people, than this is the spot!! They have great food at their food truck as well! Always have a frozen drink ready in the mixer and the bloody Mary's are great! Prices are great and the staff is even greater! Love the variety of music as well as the consistency of schedule! Sunday farmers market is awesome with morning yoga, food trucks, veggie stands, local artisans and a live band! There's Lots of variety and it's a great place for family and kids! Wednesday nights are dead on the deck and is a good time! And sometimes they have even bigger shows put out in back lot and an awesome setup inside! They also do night bazaars and holiday markets! We Love this place so much!
google avatar

Tim K.

Yelp
The Pour House is one of those venues that I'm aware of exist, but barely go. Which is unfortunate, because it's pretty cool. When you walk in, you walk into a dark and divey space with one bar in the back. The stage is pretty big and a lot of great bands play here. For me, the real action is outside. The patio is a lot bigger then indoor space. Winter or Summer, it's always booming. There's a stage outside too but I think I mostly arrive too late to see a band play. On Sundays, they organize a small but cosy farmers market which is always fun to attend
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Really close to a 5. OK, I just changed it to a 5. Really an eclectic spot that we have not taken enough advantage of but when we go we love it. Wednesday afternoon Dead music and Sunday mid-day good music. Bar is very suited for this outside. People dancing. Dogs everywhere that are well behaved. Good service at the bar and very good music. This is a great place to go when you can't think of where to go. They get some of the best music in town and not a huge cover even when they have top acts. My family and I like to go to the Farmer's Market on Sundays and then to the deck to have a drink and listen to some good tunes.
google avatar

Leslie J.

Yelp
Love this place for great music and a fun time! The deck out back is nice and big with an outdoor bar and some random arcade games. There is a food truck you can order from during deck shows. Dead on the Deck (Grateful Dead tribute band) is really fun Wednesday nights and it is free! Inside the space isn't too big but enough open space for movin' and groovin'. Nice bartenders and staff. Fun, chill place!
google avatar

Paige K.

Yelp
Killer music venue. I love the indoor/outdoor venue. My favorite nights are when they have free shows outside, but the indoor shows are always worth the cover- even if you weren't already familiar with the band. Drink prices are really reasonable for a music venue too. None of these $9-$10 beers like the other big name venues in town. Also, go grab a mimosa and check out their live music during the Sunday farmers market!

laura g.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service and nice beer list! The portion sizes were very healthy as well ;)
google avatar

Dee P.

Yelp
One of the most fun places in Charleston for a solid night of live music, excellent food, and great company. You can't go wrong grabbing a drink and hanging out here!!
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Great venue and great promoters. This is one of the rare treats in the Charleston area. From blues to rock to jazz to bluegrass, this is a great hang out. There are two stages, indoor and outdoor. Most days have free shows during happy hour and even into the evening. The crowd is always laid back and the culture is very relaxing. The outdoor stage is pet friendly and there are water coolers throughout in case you aren't in a drinking mood. The Pour House is also connected to a Cuban Restaurant if you feel like grabbing a bite first.
google avatar

Gregory J.

Yelp
In comparison to other music venues in the Charleston area, the Pourhouse is by far my favorite! Dubbed "the PoHo" by local frequent attendees, this smaller yet more intimate atmosphere for live music fulfills your ears and your drinks at an affordable price. Typically for local musicians, the cover charge ranges from free to $5, and the most common price point being set at $12. More popular bands with greater following generally sell out the venue's maximum capacity at higher prices around $25. I love this place for its fast service (considering the masses), great sound, and artistic decor that generates excellent creative vibes.
google avatar

Rebecca Q.

Yelp
The only reason this gets two stars is because the music was good. As a paying customer (our tab was around $50 so far), I have NEVER been given a time limit and then asked to leave in a bar like this. We were asked to leave, get in line again, and wait, even though we had an open tab. Oddly enough, the table next to us, who had been there before us, never had to leave, even though they were over the two hour limit. It's a shame too, because I enjoyed the atmosphere and the beer selection.

Yelp
I went to Pour House last night with my Emotional Support Dog. The disrespect i received from the bouncer and the manager was disgusting. They told me that no MORE ordinary dogs were allowed inside. I told them my puppy was an Emotional Support Animal and I showed them a digital version of his official ADA approved US Service Animal ID card. They told me that I could've just made it myself. The ID card has a QR code, an ID number and a phone number that all can be used to confirm it's authenticity. I attempted to show them the relevant evidence and laws regarding emotional support animals in South Carolina but they refused. Not only did they refuse but they were just being nasty people. This is after I had waited for 30+ minutes to get inside after reserving a spot in line. I will never return to this establishment and they are being reported.
google avatar

Alexis P.

Yelp
Such a fun place! I went on a Sunday and they had a great band playing on their back deck! Great place if you want to dance, drink and listen to some good music with friends. I really liked their frozen drink (vodka and lemonade, I think.) You won't get a straw but that's okay they are saving the turtles!!!!! If you get hungry they have a food truck with great food. Chicken philly with Tots was great!!! *if you get their a little earlier they have a farmers market*
google avatar

Haley W.

Yelp
I attended a concert at the Charleston Pour House in January and had an open tab at the bar. I had a handful of drinks and when I went to go close my tab I was told that it had already been closed and they were unable to do anything about it. When I checked my bank account the next day there was a charge for over 3x the amount it should have been. I attempted to resolve the issue with CPH by emailing the bar manager 3 different times (one of which he responded to and then never responded again) and calling. I eventually had to file a claim with my bank to attempt to get my money back. I love places that host local bands like this, but I am so disappointed with how they handled this and then refused to talk to me further about the problem.
google avatar

Yesi C.

Yelp
Went here while visiting family in the area and had a great time! The music is great and the crowd really comes out for the band! Great bartenders and the prices are awesome! I had food from the food area and honestly wasn't expecting much but the falafel sandwich was excellent! I wish I was here longer, I def make it out again for the atmosphere and food lol:)
google avatar

Peonia E.

Yelp
The star rating for me really is all about the music that might be offered at any given point in time but they definitely deserve a good solid four stars for the sheer number of acts they book through their venue and the cool factor. Great spot, I think I've been going here since they've opened on and off, and it pretty much is always delightful. Pretty good service pretty clean environment happy to see them doing well. Also the farmers market on Sunday is fun to check out.
google avatar

Yelp
This is such a cool little place! I've been here a couple of times now. First time was for a Peelander Z concert and the second time was for a farmers market. Had some live music going on, good food, neat little shops...Something I've appreciated here is not only their awesome selection of live music, but also their art around the place. Super cool. Concerts are always reasonable in cost, not overly expensive and they have a nice deck outside. I hope to return soon. I highly recommend following this place and it's events

Yelp
My friends and I were in town for a long weekend and wound up here for a Prince tribute live music event (which was fantastic). It's safe to say the people were awesome, the atmosphere and setup was incredible (I felt like I was in a huge treehouse when I went to the back), and the drinks were decently priced. We had a grand ole time and I will certainly come back to make more memories whenever I happen to be in Charleston again. We love you, Pour House!
