The Copper Onion - Review - Downtown - Salt Lake City - The Infatuation

"Head to The Copper Onion for dinner before catching an indie film at Broadway Centre Cinemas. This lively brasserie-style restaurant opened in 2010 and is still going strong today. The menu changes occasionally, but the delicious ricotta dumplings topped with parmigiano-reggiano have been around since day one, much like that childhood friend who remembers your first AIM screen name. Always start with the dumplings, then move on to the housemade pastas, like the fettuccine carbonara or the wagyu beef stroganoff. If you’re craving a fun cocktail, go with something like the Emergency Poncho: a fusion of mezcal, pineapple, cinnamon, lime, and spicy ancho reyes liqueur." - Jenny Willden

The 28 Best Salt Lake City Restaurants - Eater

"After serving as chef de partie at two-Michelin-starred Jean-Georges, Ryan Lowder opened his own place to focus on locally sourced ingredients from regional purveyors. Located in the heart of downtown, this new American restaurant serves lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch with both indoor and outdoor seating areas. The menu changes seasonally based upon product availability, but mainstays such as the ricotta dumplings, patatas bravas, Wagyu beef stroganoff, and rainbow trout keep regulars coming back." - Sarah Entwistle

If I could give half stars, this would be a solid 3.5 stars. This restaurant was highly spoken of prior to my visit so I had high expectations, which may be why I was partly disappointed as well. It felt like a very basic, expected experience, nothing too special about the place. I wasn't disappointed, but I also wasn't surprised or wowed by anything at all. I made a reservation because I was told it gets pretty busy and I just wanted to be on the safe side, but I arrived at 8:30pm on a Tuesday evening and no reservation was needed. There were a lot of seating options available. The steak was delicious, just as expected, the bearnaise sauce was also really perfectly prepared. The fries were not good. They were way over seasoned and tasted really oily. I only ate about a handful. When the meal only consists of steak and fries, both have to be on point. I think the vibe of the place was welcoming and I can see it being a good place to come with family or a group of friends which is why I'm giving it a 4-star vs. a 3 star. The outside seating area is right on the street. Food was 7/10 Vibe was 8/10 Service 8/10

The entire experience was exceptional. We stated with the salted chili whipped ricotta and sourdough. Appetizers were the black pepper mussels and the goat cheese salad. The goat cheese salad was an expert pairing, and the flavors together were amazing. Entree was the Wagyu beef stroganoff; the preparation was elevated, comfort food with fresh noodles, and a nice spooning of creme friache: the mushrooms were varied and well prepared, making the dish a delight to eat. We received a gratis order of the ricotta dumplings. These are not to be missed; they are scrumptious.

After walking around downtown SLC, we stumbled upon this gem. My steak salad was definitely filling but light, especially after a night of silent disco and too many vodka sodas. My husband's burger was delicious, but the real star was the French fries. Crispy but not greasy. PS- Don't sleep on the house pickles!

Randomly visiting SLC and this place popped up on my TikTok when I was thinking about dinner. Weird. Anyway! Service was beautiful! We were sat immediately at 630p on a Saturday, lucky us. Requested outside then requested inside about 10 minutes after we were sat. The wind had picked up heavily in a short time so we decided to be pains. Our server was happy to change our seats, didn’t have us feeling bad about it at all. All service was absolutely lovely. I was most excited about the small plates/shareables so we started with the house sour dough with whipped ricotta and salted peppers, grilled asparagus, and crispy goat cheese salad. It was all great! The crispy goat cheese salad was the highlight of the meal, perfectly crispy cheese with a mouth puckering dressing that balanced everything out nicely. The bread and whipped ricotta and peppers was a close second. The salted peppers were no joke, make sure you have water. The spice was perfect, the salt is what burned my mouth. But still very good. The grilled asparagus needed another minute or two on the grill but all in all was very tasty and a valuable break from the salt. For entrees we both ordered pasta, I had the cacio a pepe and my husband had the bolognese. The pasta portions were really small, so be aware of that. Wasn’t a problem for us because of all the starters we had. His bolognese was really good. Al dente pasta and a spicy, flavorful, creamy sauce. And here comes the sad part….the cacio a Pepe was the worse pasta I’ve ever been served in a restaurant, and we’ve eaten at Olive Garden soo… I think it was microwaved, shockingly. It was inedible. Dry, crusty, rubbery, weird. Like the pasta you take to work and accidentally microwave too long. I was pretty baffled but also too full and satisfied to care much. I didn’t complain. All in all would definitely return here but we’d stick to the small plates, things where they shine! The bill was crazy cheap, even with my wine.

I am thankful that we were seated earlier than our reservation time. The place was not that full at 8pm. We were asked if we prefer outdoor or indoors, which was nice. We seated indoors. Our waitress finally came to our table after a few waiters came by and just gave us a stare. This took longer for a not so busy day. We were given water and asked if we were ready to order. The food. The bone marrow had barely any marrow. The steak on the steak frittes was a bit on the salty side. The wagyu beef stroganoff was more of a mushroom stroganoff. There were just 3 very small pieces of beef in it and a ton of very salty mushrooms. The burger was the best item we ordered. Overall, the ambience was good but the food just so so.

Google
Some dishes were on the salty side and I usually like a decent amount of salt. But not all dishes were salty which made it strange. The meat loaf was probably the best dish we ordered. The fries that came with the hamburger were really salty but the burger wasn’t salty. I guess YMMV depending on the dish you order

Awesome dining and beverage option in Salt Lake City. First time was about 6 yrs ago, happy to see that nothing has changed! My preference is their dinner menu. Service is fun, the bartenders and servers always have great recommendations. Do not miss their bone marrow or their steak!! This time I tried both dinner and lunch… sticking to dinner, atmosphere is a game changer. Thank you guys, had a wonderful time visiting again.

We went for an anniversary. It’s been on my list for years. I’m so upset we hadn’t gone before because everything was incredible. The service was top notch. For the type of food I expected to spend double what we did. So I am excited to return for more special events. However, I wish I could have a vat of the glaze on the lamb.. so SO good. My husband is gluten free due to celiacs and finally he got to have a great meal and not have to compromise great flavor

Yelp
For my short winded readers: I was recommended the Copper Onion Burger(the best seller apparently) and I will say it was a great burger. Well seasoned and sauced and definitely would recommend($23 if you get it with bacon and cheese). It's got a good aesthetic and is right downtown if you want somewhere cute to go! For my long-winded readers Color me impressed with how quick and consistent their service was here. Came in with a party of 10 without a reservation during lunch time and they were able to get us sat pretty quickly. After taking our orders the food came out relatively quickly. We had ordered some sourdough bread and fries for the table. The bread came with goat cheese if I believe and it was fine, I probably wouldn't spend the $6 for 3 slices of sourdough but I would eat it if it was complimentary. The fries were good but it was a very light amount for ordering for the table As for the entree, I was recommended the Copper Onion Burger(as mentioned above) which turned out to be quite delicious. Paired with my side of fries(though they put the knife below the fries to make the plate seem more full) it made for a good combo. The vibe felt like a mix of modern/retro bar aesthetic. I wouldn't say it was extremely nice but it would be just fine for a business lunch or fun outing with your plus one. All in all this place is definitely somewhere if you're in SLC that you should try at least once. Would gladly recommend to anyone looking for a place to try downtown.

Yelp
As the late and great chef Anthony Bourdain once famously said, "Salt is the magic ingredient. Not enough, and you're bland. Too much, and you've killed it." Welp, the cook killed most of our dishes on Sunday night, 6/1. As my son put it, the food was so salty that it dry-burned his tastebuds. I agree, and for me, it carried over into the morning -- even with all the water I drank, I was still puffy and dehydrated. My god, so. much. salt. There were six of us, and we tried several appetizers, sides and main dishes. For the sourdough, you'd expect decent bread for $7. It was uneventful. They brought us a small wedge of bread cut into four unequal portions. I tried to cut it in a way that all six of us could get a taste. Nice bread, but the overall portion size served to us was cheap. Kind of embarrassing to even get it. The ricotta was enjoyable but it was just your basic ricotta with some chilies on top. The patatas bravas crispy potatoes with spicy aioli was salty AF. It's foolish to serve scalding hot potato chunks, with no temperature warning. After a couple of people burned their mouths, we set it aside for a bit. The sautéed mushrooms came with a mostly raw "fried" egg on top. We ate the dish, but it didn't have any salsa verde on it as featured on the menu. The crispy little potato crisps were the saving grace, as the mushrooms were just barely sautéed and some had a rubbery mouth-feel. Thankfully this dish was not overly salted. They offer sides $7 apiece or 3/$18 so we selected cauliflower, steak fries, and marinated artichokes for the table to share. The crispy cauliflower dish was the best of the three. Perfect seasoning. It was very yummy and I wish we'd ordered three of that, but was talked out of it by the waitress. :-/ Ugh. The steak fries were appallingly salty, and the marinated artichoke was just like a jar you'd get off the shelf at the grocery store. While not bad, there was nothing unique about the artichoke hearts, sorry. One guest ordered the carbonara and enjoyed it. She remarked about the salt, but she was overall happy with the dish. Two guests ordered the wagyu stroganoff and enjoyed the flavors very much. While salty, it wasn't as much of an issue as the three other dishes. For such nice meat, it was unexpected that the wagyu was cooked to well-done. It was all still very tender and flavorful. It was tasty, even though it resembled pan fried pieces of soft pot roast. A guest ordered rainbow trout with the lentils and Turkish yogurt. He enjoyed eating the foods, but ate the two separately. He remarked that the delicate flavors of the fish were overpowered by the spiciness and the strong curry flavors of the lentils. Next guest had the Rigatoni Bolognese. This was a ridiculously salty meal, and unpleasantly spicy. No mention of spice on the menu, yet it was very spicy. The heat level she gave was about a 3 out of 5. On the menu, the ricotta was forewarned as salty. Holy smokes, it was salt on salt on salt. No respite for the tastebuds. Lastly was the waygu steak with Parmesan fries. Again, with the heavy handed salt. The steak was enjoyed, but the fries were not. This guy usually snarfs down his entire plate yet he left most of the fries and remarked at the overwhelming saltiness. Their ginger beer was a ridiculously overpriced bottle of Cock and Bull, then there was a can of beer from a local brewery, Dr Pepper fountain drink. As for cocktails, very small portions ounce wise: the mojito had copious amounts of crushed ice, and the two Space Cowboy cocktails were small. They brought out a free dessert for our guest's birthday, and they even had a candle so we sang Happy Birthday to her. That was a really nice touch. Unfortunately the waitress was nowhere to be found -- they'd cleared a lot of the table but didn't bring her a spoon or any way to eat her rhubarb cobbler with vanilla ice cream. After watching the ice cream melt away in the hot cobbler, she gave up and ate what she wanted with her damn knife. For a table of SIX, they preemptively tacked on TWENTY percent gratuity. I would have liked to do this myself, and generally give more for our birthday outings. I felt slightly resentful seeing that they'd automatically granted themselves a "perfect" 20% tip for less than stellar service, and salt preserved foods. Overall I was less than impressed, and left with a bad, SALTY taste in my mouth. Two stars I guess? Meh. Color me unimpressed, and salty. Very overpriced for what you get. IMO The Copper Onion deserves a health warning for anyone that's on a low sodium diet. :(

Yelp
Loved their mushroom appetizer which the server recommended! Definitely, a must try! I was a little bummed out that the sourdough bread was cold but the ricotta and spicy pepper made up for that. I would pass on Cacio e Pepe if you've had a good one at an Italian restaurant. It was dry, too salty and the cracked pepper hits you. Another person ordered beef stroganoff and said her dish was salty as well. 3 side dishes which were a good deal for $18. They should add the word celery to the radish and cucumber salad. I accidentally went to their bar next door which had an amazing swanky ambience but the restaurant wasn't as decked out. The service was great and the restaurant was super busy for a weeknight. I recommend making reservations.

Yelp
The funny thing is that this wasn't my first foray into the world of The Copper Onion. On a late Fall trip in '16 we actually drove through here on a trip from Los Angeles. It was literally the only place we stopped or ate at in Salt Lake. I don't remembered what we ordered then but I know I liked it. I liked it enough to promise to come back the next time I was in this neighborhood. Well, I did have it again and this time I loved it. The lamb shank was at its gamiest best--smooth, supple, and full of beefy goodness. Combine that with a bed of potatoes that you can drop an egg into without breaking because it was so soft and pillowy, and you have the makings of one memorable meal. The staff was super nice, especially our server, for whom I gel bad because Carly and I couldn't agree on a dessert we liked best. And, as last time, the surroundings and decor of the joint is just the vibe I love. It was busy without being overly loud. It was dim without being like a cave. And the tables were packed but not tight enough to feel like you're cramped up in there. It's a Goldilocks setting. My only regret is I don't have enough days in this visit to try out the whole menu to bask in the Copper Onion-ness of it all.

Yelp
I am combining two nights in a row at my favorite place in SLC. Night one started with the mussels followed by the American Wagyu Burger. I have ranted about delicious the mussels are in past visits here and I am doing it again. It is one of those appetizers that pairs well with nice bold Cabernet. Some would think white wine but I would argue that point. You try and decide. As for the burger, worth its weight in gold! Perfectly cooked and seasoned and juicy. A must try for those undecided. Night two was guided by Taylor who helped me get on this track and started out with sautéed mushrooms with onion sticks and a fried egg on top. I was floored and again, this one went well with the Daou Cabernet. I decided to go rich with the Wagyu Beef Stroganoff. The Wagyu beef was so tender you could cut it with a fork. The wide egg noodle was a nice touch and was cooked to perfection. The mushrooms were over the top. I may have went overboard with the mushrooms but every single bite was worth it and I am not even tripping out. Bummer maybe? Trust the servers here and don't always listen to your stomach. I love this place and sitting at the counter watching this smoothly oiled machine of a kitchen work was very entertaining. I have great appreciation for all of those folks making every dish with passion so guys like me can enjoy it after a long day of meetings. All I can say is try this place and sit at the counter. You will know exactly what I am talking about. Plus, you get to see every dish going out which is pure torture. Enjoy!!

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant in Salt Lake City. I love that they have an open concept kitchen. I only ordered to go. The wait was short and the food maintained its integrity as I drove back to my hotel room. I ordered the Wagyu Beef Stroganoff it was so good the beef was cooked to perfection flavorful, pasta was homemade, the mushrooms and cream sauce made it the perfect Stroganoff. If I return to SLC this will be my first stop.

Yelp
Cool spot for American food and cocktails. We each ordered the classics on the menu and were all happy with our dishes. The Copper Onion Burger was huge, however fries were a tad too salty. The restaurant's atmosphere is very inviting and servers are all friendly.

Yelp
Duck poutine. Almost no duck at all. A few slivers. Had to dig for it. WAY too salty. My friend's meal was also way too salty - the Sauted Mushrooms. I should have also told the staff my meal was too salty because they were nice and refunded her meal. Two stars because the staff were friendly. Otherwise one star for the meal. Would not come back.

Yelp
Prob a 4.5 but I'll round up for service! We started with a bunch of apps: - patatas bravas 2.5/5 - too seasoned for me - Shisitos 4/5 everyone enjoyed them! - Bone Marrow 4/5 - great portion for the price! Tasty but not the best I've ever had - bread with whipped ricotta - I didn't try so can't say! Then we ordered a variety of entrees. Everyone seemed to enjoy them including the chicken, the burgers, the stroganoff, and I got the steak frites. Best steak I've had in a while and that includes expensive steakhouses in Chicago. It was perfectly crispy and salty on the outside but medium rare to perfection on the inside. Loved the seasoned fries. I would come back for this meal alone! Def want to try the Brussels next time! Friends also enjoyed their cocktails. I ordered a skinny spicy marg and it was perfection!

Yelp
Take 2 I came here for dinner for Father's Day tonight around 8(btw amazing lighting for food pics/selfies/groupies lol) Adam was our server and he did a great job at his suggestions. I had littles at my table and as a parent I appreciated how attentive he was to our kids including the infant in a high chair. Not too many servers have the patience to actively engage with 5 & 6 year old. I was impressed! We ordered all the appetizers that had an onion next to it lol We also added 3 sides 2 fries and 1 cauliflower and all were so good, my personal fav was the cauliflower. We all came hungry and there were 8 of us. We wiped our plates clean, desserts included hahahaha. Props to the chefs!!!! Appetizers are on the smaller side, some can be heavy on the salt but overall I enjoyed every single dish we got. I don't mind a little salt but my husband thought it was a bit much. Mind you, this is still one of his favorite restaurants. We came hungry, conquered and walked out feeling like champs. Everything was amazing, we will be back to try brunch next.

Yelp
An incredible, delicious, sensory experience. First off, the atmosphere is electrifying, loud, and buzzing with life. Every single employee from bus-boy to host looked and acted like they loved their job, it really made for good vibes. My husband and I came to celebrate our anniversary, we made a reservation and I'm glad we did because by the time we were leaving around 8pm the waiting room was full. Our server, Adam M. was phenomenal! Our glasses were always full, we never waited to order and constantly had our dirty dishes cleared. Really felt like we were actually being waited on. Incredible service! Now for the food -- what we've been waiting for... * Cider - 5/5. It's aromatic, spicy, the orange - truly transformative drink and the perfect way to start, on a cold evening. * Lobster bisque (soup of the day) - 3.5/5. Really yummy, no real lobster meat. * Crispy cauliflower - 6/5. So so delicious, I mean we just kept asking ourselves "what the hell did they put in this?!" This is a must. * Waygu beef stroganoff - 2/5. I (like many others) were tempted at the promise of a creamy "homemade" style dish with waygu. Just like others said, it was way too salty - made my tongue buzz. Plus, it's almost impossible to tell mushrooms from beef (which is about 3/4 to 1/4 ratio anyways) I really did want to like it, but it was just not it. * Chocolate pudding - 6/5. I don't even know how to describe this besides it's life changing. The subtle hint of coffee, the light sprinkle of salt, the cream?! Legit amazing. I think I'll come back just for this. *chefs kiss* * Cheesecake - 6/5. You haven't had cheesecake until you've had this. Nothing compares! I don't know how they do it but every bite consisted of complex layers of flavor that hit all at different times, creating a unique and magical experience. Delicious! You bet your bottom dollar I'm recommending this place to everyone I know, and coming back as soon as I can.

Yelp
Cute spot for dinner! Loved the vibes! Good music and dimmed lights! Excellent service! Food was solid but just a tad bit salty for me!

Yelp
I got the cacio e pepe with trout, and it was fantastic. The trout skin was perfectly crisped, and the fish was cooked just right. The pasta had a great bite, and even though I tried to save half for lunch tomorrow, I ended up eating the whole thing! The drinks were a little pricey, but not unreasonable for the quality. The waitstaff was attentive and kind, making the experience even better. Even though we didn't have a reservation on a Thursday night and had to wait about 40 minutes, they were super accommodating, especially with our 2-year-old guest. The whole family was happy with the food. The ambiance was that of a casual restaurant, though it was kind of crowded, which gave it a lively vibe. The place was full of pig statues and art everywhere, adding a quirky touch to the atmosphere. Overall, it was a really great experience!

Yelp
Beef Stroganabulous! Last time I was in SLC I enjoyed this dish and Im happy to say it has stayed on the menu. Service was also first rate. Thank you Jesse!

Yelp
Don't hate me for saying this... but I was a tad underwhelmed by The Copper Onion. I had heard this was THE dinner spot in SLC and it fell a bit short for me. It was still a great evening and the food was good. But I wasn't really blown away like everyone had told me I would be. We shared the oysters, patatas bravas, pork belly, crispy cauliflower, and French fries. And then for our main entrees we enjoyed the stroganoff and the roast chicken. Everything was good but nothing was really memorable. Some dishes were over seasoned while others were under seasoned. I did really like the vibe/ambiance and the staff is exceptional. I can see why people rave about The Copper Onion and I hope that my next visit is even better than the last.

Yelp
A great place to meet some friends for a quick bite and drinks. Multiple apps to choose from for the whole table to share. The Wagyu Bone Marrow wasn't enjoyed by most of the group unfortunately. While the Copper Onion Burger seems like a plain choice, it was one of the tastiest burgers I've probably ever had. The bun was soft, but didn't get soggy from the juicy burger patty. I don't know how they did it. Gorgeous restaurant with an old school vibe. Bar did a great job on the Moscow Mules, with plenty of beer options to quench your thirst.

Emma Z.

Yelp
Right downtown SLC, very cute place inside. Might be paying for the location a bit, but the food and service are still pretty good. Appetizers/sides are the star - the crispy cauliflowers got many reviews and recommendations and really didn't disappoint; pork belly was tender and crispy on the outside, paired with tangy sauce to cut through the grease; the mushrooms are fresh and paired both matchstick fries for texture contrast (flavor could've been better with some light sauce). The entree dishes were executed well but nothing too exciting. The cast iron chicken was tender and juicy, with nice creamy sauce, but the fried bread was way too greasy and way too big & hard to bite. They had a great holiday seasonal drink, the hot cider was delicious (virgin or alcoholic version). But the dessert options were quite plain and non-intriguing.
google avatar

Vanessa W.

Yelp
Loved their pork belly appetizer and the stroganoff was delicious! I wouldn't get the dumplings again. Chicken had great taste and texture. Didn't have an issue parking. Music was at the right volume to where I could still have a conversation. Service was very good. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
The food was really good and we were sat almost immediately with our reservation. The atmosphere was a little bit hipster but nothing against the restaurant. The restaurant was a little bit loud during busy lunch rush but overall was a good place to eat. We had the copper onion burger, with arugala salad and the ricotta dumplings. Would definitely recommend. They were incredible.

Yelp
I can't believe I am taking 3 years to write a review about this fantastic restaurant, but I am cleaning a bunch of old photo albums and saw the pictures of a great Valentines diner with my boyfriend back then. I remember the great atmosphere, the shishito peppers and patatas bravas and, by the pictures I took, the food was awesome and satisfying. I remember the bf had to make reservation weeks in advance as this place was very trendy. Great memories of my last time visiting Salk Lake City!

Yelp
The Copper Onion is the dinner spot in Salt Lake City! It opened in 2010 and this loud brasserie-style restaurant has excellent food but is approachab and comfortable. I couldn't get enough of their watermelon gazpacho--so refreshing, it was the highlight of my meal. The menu is packed with unique, well-crafted dishes made in-house daily, and it's clear that Chef Ryan Lowder, who trained under Jean-Georges, knows exactly what he's doing. Add in the impressive wine and cocktail menus, and it's the perfect spot for dinner. The Copper Onion is the dinner spot in Salt Lake City! Yelp
This was a great suggestion given to us by our friend who lives in the area for a cute dinner date. The wagyu stroganoff was AMAZING. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and it was essentially inhaled. Minimal words spoken at dinner because it was SO GOOD. Thank you to our server for recommending the chocolate pudding (I never would've ordered it) but it was DELICIOUS with a sprinkle of flaky salt to truly make the dessert 5/5 stars.

Yelp
The Copper Onion was the pick for a Friday lunch. My friend and I went right as the restaurant opened and we were able to get seated right away. We had the option to seat indoor or outdoor. We sat inside for the A/C. For food, I decided to get the Carbonara. After ordering, it took about 8-10 minutes for it to come out. It was fresh, creamy, and had a strong garlic flavor. There were also many pieces of bacon.

Yelp
Came to grab some dinner, and the food was so delicious. Their ricotta dumplings were so good, and the orange duck--I was impressed by how good it was. I had a bad experience with another restaurant trying their duck, so I was afraid to have the same bad experience, but it wasn't; I do highly recommend it!

Yelp
As a regular customer of the Copper Onion who frequently brings out of town guests here for both business and personal meals I was shocked and disappointed in the treatment I received by the staff. My diabetic sister brought her empty Stanley cup and filled it up with the water served at the table, something that we've done here before without issue. After receiving our appetizers we were informed that she could not have the bottle at the table and they took it for the duration of our meal. We were further charged an automatic 20 percent gratuity for what was lackluster service. I asked to speak with the manager who was a person named Brennan. Brennan was neither understanding nor friendly. Brennan looked quite pleased that we were upset and proceeded to condescendingly minimize our negative experience. As others have noted, this experience is no longer unique here. As a recent yelper stated, "The food was good. Ambience is fine. The service, unfortunately, was subpar. They get three stars because they performed their roles and were timely. But in the realm of cordiality, it was more aligned with a two star experience. Based on collective attitude it would be one star." The food is good but good enough for me to return.

Yelp
A really awesome spot in a not so awesome city. Popping into the Copper Onion, I was able to pretend I was back in Chicago - clearly this spot is led by folks that know food and hospitality. The seasoning was exceptionally on point, as were the attention to details - and the quality ingredients all shined, in what is effectively a little down town hipster hole in the wall of an otherwise odd, suburban vibed down town. Super highly recommended for everything one would be concerned about. Zero complaints, and only praise for this exceptionally delicious restaurant.

Yelp
Turkish eggs were good! Duck Poutine and Shakshouka were okay. Very popular brunch spot, reservation advised. Street parking available.

Yelp
Great food and service especially authentic European menus, and exotic cocktails. Highly recommend

Yelp
The copper onion was amazing. I came here for a birthday dinner and every single dish we ordered we loved the fried artichoke was a huge hit the aïoli sauce. It comes with that they make in house is wonderful. I got the Wagyu beef stroganoff. The portion was big enough. I had leftovers and it was still just as delicious the very next day I would come back and order it again. My friends split the Cacio E Pepe they really enjoyed it. I do have to say they ricotta dumplings are a little strange but vegetarian friendly so they're not terrible. I just don't know that I would order them again. And the fries the Parmesan fries are just typical. You can maybe skip those get the spicy potatoes instead. We were so full from the food. We did not end up ordering dessert, but it did look amazing everyone else who is ordering it! lol The restaurant is pretty loud so between the volume from the other tables and the loud music you do have to speak in a pretty loud voice to hear people across from you at the table. I would definitely recommend I would come here again. I would order the same dishes. I would try new dishes. It's in a great location. I love this restaurant. I would give it a 9 out of 10.

Yelp
This was my second visit to Copper Onion, this time with my taste buds fully in tact and no cold, and with a co-worker along for the meal. I ordered the mushroom grain bowl, which came with sliced bell pepper, avocado, a variety of mushrooms, pickled radish and sliced snow pea pods, with a ginger-sesame dressing. It was served cold, and could have used more dressing, but was very fresh and felt healthy. My co-worker ordered the fried goat cheese salad which looked very simple, but she said was perfect. Also pictured here were the fried artichokes served with a garlicky aioli - I got those last visit and loved them, so got them again. Copper Onion has a great ambiance, a wait staff full of professional, friendly and personable servers, and a great menu using local and seasonal ingredients. I'm happy to have visited again and look forward to my next visit! Final note - this location is in downtown SLC and street parking is for-pay via an app. Both visits I had no trouble finding spots to park right in front of the restaurant, but it did take a few minutes to download the parking app, set up an account and method of payment, and then figure out my zone and parking spot numbers. But once I did all that it was pretty easy. For approx 1.5 hrs it cost me $3.60.

Yelp
This was a biz dinner with appetizers for 5. Potatas Bravas... Heavily fried but served Luke warm to cold. We all tried one and the whole bowl went back untouched. Don't go there, flavorless no seasoning. Frozen tater tots would have been better. Pork belly... this was fantastic A+. Dumplings another epic fail. Zero flavor taken back untouched. Now the order: one was meatloaf which was excellent. The chicken and croutons were ok...chicken great but croutons would need a chainsaw to even penetrate. Here is the funny one, I ordered Stroganoff and got chicken. They did fix that but still weird as everyone at the table heard me but the waiter may have not. More on stroganoff later. The other guest ordered the burger and asked for the salad and fries but only received salad yet we were billed 9.00 for the fries so the waiter did have ears. Now the stroganoff...if wagyu as advertised it must have been Sysco bargain wagyu from a ranch in Death Valley as it was as chewy as US select grade stew meat. The pasta was also undercooked although tasty sauce, it was not close to al dente. I ordered Melvin Beer with a cold glass. The beer was cold but the glass was not. Here is the final kicker...they don't offer salt and pepper at the table or in a service grinder. We asked and they brought in little stainless condiment cups with no little spoon to dispense. I guess we just use our fingers or go for the big dump, I've not seen that in my 62 years of life on planet earth. There were some items that were good but considering price, the service, and flavors should have excelled. BTW if the food were well seasoned salt and pepper would be less of a concern. In conclusion before we were ready to leave the staff started clearing our silverware and without asking took our drinks and water. We would have ordered another drink as we were still talking business. Second time here and I now know why. The years cleared my memory. This I'll not forget.

Yelp
Excellent bistro-style brunch in SLC's downtown, March 2025 Our server was gracious, engaging and knew the menu well. He really helped make our brunch an excellent experience. We would be happy to return next time we're in town. - Son loved his carbonara - he wished the portion had been bigger. - Goat Cheese Salad: The crispy round of goat cheese fritter was perfect as were greens & dressing. - Sauteed mushrooms with fried egg, potato sticks, salsa verde: they kindly substituted a poached egg at my counterpart's request, much to her delight. - Copper Onion Burger: server suggested done to medium as kitchen recommendation - sounded reasonable to me: I like some grill on my burger. Kitchen delivered a burger that was rare on the verge of "very rare." It was fine, but I think it failed to live up to what it could have been. The parmesan/parsley fries were excellent. Host sat us next to a four-top with a screeching toddler in an entirely empty house. Perhaps because we arrived minutes after opening without a reservation?

Yelp
When visiting Salt Lake City wanted to try out this place downtown. Definitely didn't disappoint. We had the Ricotta Dumplings as an appetizer which were very good. For lunch decided on the Waygu Beef Stroganoff, homemade noodles and a light sauce, was very tasty and a pretty good portion for lunch. Our waitress was extremely friendly and the aesthetic of the restaurant itself was great. Looked like they have a good lunch crowd, we were just visiting on vacation. Would love to come Back and try more.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the bread and it was a decent amount for $7. Both my pasta and my partner's pork chop were really well done. The pork chop sauce reminded me of mole (sortuh - vaguely) and I wish it had been even a little bit spicy. The oysters were not great and I would pass on those in the future. Oh and the beer was canned so $8 seemed a bit high. The bill came out to about $97 after tip. Overall I would definitely come again and just avoid the oysters and beer if you care about it being on draft or not.

Yelp
Trout with curry lentils was delicious and the gin cocktail I had was also very tasty. My friend said meatloaf as too heavy but overall good. Noise level okay for table of 4 - if larger group, we would not be able to hear each other.

Yelp
One of the highest rated restaurants in the area, can see why. Great ambiance & beautiful setting. Reservations are definitely recommended for this place. We got lucky with the walk-in and only had to wait about 15 to 20 minutes. This place is jam-packed and people keep coming in. - wagyu beef stroganoff - 4/5 - overall delicious but a bit overly seasoned. I could only get through half of it because it was so salty in the end but otherwise the creaminess, texture, and soft meat was quite good - carbonara - 5/5 - as expected, creamy goodness - beet caprese- 4/5 - a fun Twist on the traditional kind with tomato - crispy cauliflower- 5/5 - kind of wish I just got four of these for dinner. Absolutely delicious - Apple Cider - 5/5 - this is a seasonal item and came highly recommended and I can see why. It tasted like Christmas! They have an alcoholic and non-alcoholic version Our server was great! Gave the perfect recommendations and was just so pleasant!

Yelp
Great food and great cocktails for salt lake. Book early as reservations hard to get during peaks.

Yelp
The Wagyu Beef Stroganoff was good, but beef wasn't as melty as I was hoping for, mushrooms were a bit too salty. The portion was perfect for my husband and I with a hunger level of 6.5/10. The potata bravas was okay. Over all, we rate this place 7.5/10 for the food. Service was very good, with our attentive waiter. 10/10

Yelp
I Used to really love this place... depends on the day, time & server if you'll have a good day here nowadays.. The burger, side of olives & mushroom egg appetizer is my go to if I go here... The place has a famous chef who I've never seen nor met no matter that I'd been here over the years like 4 dozen times....

Yelp
I think that the ambiance is great and the place is nice. The service is good and very attentive. The only thing that was a surprise was the prices. My friend got a burger and he said it was nothing to write home about. I got the pork belly appetizer and it was very good (ot was also $18). A lot more than some very good full meals at other places. But you are also paying for the place, I am sure. Over all, I would go back with a few friends. I really liked the ambiance.

Yelp
I'm not sure how I haven't been here yet! Traveling to SLC for work I've tried so many great restaurants and this is on the top of my list! I got to sit at the chefs counter and watch them prepare everyone's food. The attention to detail was top notch. I got the wagyu beef stroganoff which is a house speciality, and the watermelon gazpacho. Both were delicious! Perfectly seasoned, great texture, and flavors! I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
It had been 10 years since I had been back to Copper Onion. That stroganoff lived in my head rent free for that long as I would tell so many to go try it over the years. Loved reliving the experience - SO delicious. The spicy potato appetizer is sneaky good too. Really, everything is good.

Yelp
Copper onion is a salt lake favorite. Living here for so long it took me a while to actually dine here. I always hear so much about it, but never had the opportunity until most recently. When walking in, you're greeted by a very friendly hostess. I highly recommend getting an appointment, but if you want to try your luck with walk ins, it's still worth it. I personally did a walk in (2 people) and was sat immediately at the bar. The food here is delicious! The drinks are phenomenal! My favorite is the beef stroganoff. The cut of beef they used i think is beef ribs. The perfect balance of lean and fat. The noodles were perfect. I highly recommend this place. I can definitely see why people like to come here especially for dates. Great atmosphere and yummy food.

Yelp
Great food. My only gripe is the name sort of screams french onion soup. They dint have it, never had it.

Yelp
The Copper Onion is obviously the It spot of SLC and it's understandable why. The food was impeccable! The duck wasn't even recommended by the bartender but was incredible. The sauce, veggies, and duck tasted delicious that the plate was literally wiped cleaned when finished. We also had the dulce de leche panna cotta. It was so tasty that I didn't even grab a photo since it was devoured almost immediately. Will definitely be back again on the next visit. (It is hard to get in so make a reservation in advance.)

Yelp
Positive experience at this SLC landmark--solid 4.5 stars. Had reservation Sunday at 5pm when the opened and it was already busy. Not much open Sunday in Utah so that could be contributing factor. My daughter loved the patata bravas (fried potatoes with spicy aioli), which reminded her of a favorite appetizer in Southern Spain. I had the stroganoff--nice portion--not too much. My daughter had the steak and frites. Cooked perfectly. We shared a carrot cake to end a great meal. Service was good. We will be back.

Yelp
Walked in during a business trip. Please was packed for a Wednesday evening, so make reservations if you don't want to wait or sit at the bar. Service was great. Food was excellent, minus it being alittle too salty for me (more so from the additional salt sprinkled on top of everything.) risotto had a great flavor, great sized portion. Steak was a tender cut, large portion, seasoned well (minus the extra salt) and fries were delicious. Parking is tricky... if you can find street parking, then lucky you... otherwise plan to walk a bit.
