As the late and great chef Anthony Bourdain once famously said, "Salt is the magic ingredient. Not enough, and you're bland. Too much, and you've killed it." Welp, the cook killed most of our dishes on Sunday night, 6/1. As my son put it, the food was so salty that it dry-burned his tastebuds. I agree, and for me, it carried over into the morning -- even with all the water I drank, I was still puffy and dehydrated. My god, so. much. salt.
There were six of us, and we tried several appetizers, sides and main dishes. For the sourdough, you'd expect decent bread for $7. It was uneventful. They brought us a small wedge of bread cut into four unequal portions. I tried to cut it in a way that all six of us could get a taste. Nice bread, but the overall portion size served to us was cheap. Kind of embarrassing to even get it. The ricotta was enjoyable but it was just your basic ricotta with some chilies on top.
The patatas bravas crispy potatoes with spicy aioli was salty AF. It's foolish to serve scalding hot potato chunks, with no temperature warning. After a couple of people burned their mouths, we set it aside for a bit.
The sautéed mushrooms came with a mostly raw "fried" egg on top. We ate the dish, but it didn't have any salsa verde on it as featured on the menu. The crispy little potato crisps were the saving grace, as the mushrooms were just barely sautéed and some had a rubbery mouth-feel. Thankfully this dish was not overly salted.
They offer sides $7 apiece or 3/$18 so we selected cauliflower, steak fries, and marinated artichokes for the table to share. The crispy cauliflower dish was the best of the three. Perfect seasoning. It was very yummy and I wish we'd ordered three of that, but was talked out of it by the waitress. :-/ Ugh. The steak fries were appallingly salty, and the marinated artichoke was just like a jar you'd get off the shelf at the grocery store. While not bad, there was nothing unique about the artichoke hearts, sorry.
One guest ordered the carbonara and enjoyed it. She remarked about the salt, but she was overall happy with the dish.
Two guests ordered the wagyu stroganoff and enjoyed the flavors very much. While salty, it wasn't as much of an issue as the three other dishes. For such nice meat, it was unexpected that the wagyu was cooked to well-done. It was all still very tender and flavorful. It was tasty, even though it resembled pan fried pieces of soft pot roast.
A guest ordered rainbow trout with the lentils and Turkish yogurt. He enjoyed eating the foods, but ate the two separately. He remarked that the delicate flavors of the fish were overpowered by the spiciness and the strong curry flavors of the lentils.
Next guest had the Rigatoni Bolognese. This was a ridiculously salty meal, and unpleasantly spicy. No mention of spice on the menu, yet it was very spicy. The heat level she gave was about a 3 out of 5. On the menu, the ricotta was forewarned as salty. Holy smokes, it was salt on salt on salt. No respite for the tastebuds.
Lastly was the waygu steak with Parmesan fries. Again, with the heavy handed salt. The steak was enjoyed, but the fries were not. This guy usually snarfs down his entire plate yet he left most of the fries and remarked at the overwhelming saltiness.
Their ginger beer was a ridiculously overpriced bottle of Cock and Bull, then there was a can of beer from a local brewery, Dr Pepper fountain drink. As for cocktails, very small portions ounce wise: the mojito had copious amounts of crushed ice, and the two Space Cowboy cocktails were small.
They brought out a free dessert for our guest's birthday, and they even had a candle so we sang Happy Birthday to her. That was a really nice touch. Unfortunately the waitress was nowhere to be found -- they'd cleared a lot of the table but didn't bring her a spoon or any way to eat her rhubarb cobbler with vanilla ice cream. After watching the ice cream melt away in the hot cobbler, she gave up and ate what she wanted with her damn knife.
For a table of SIX, they preemptively tacked on TWENTY percent gratuity. I would have liked to do this myself, and generally give more for our birthday outings. I felt slightly resentful seeing that they'd automatically granted themselves a "perfect" 20% tip for less than stellar service, and salt preserved foods. Overall I was less than impressed, and left with a bad, SALTY taste in my mouth. Two stars I guess? Meh. Color me unimpressed, and salty.
Very overpriced for what you get. IMO The Copper Onion deserves a health warning for anyone that's on a low sodium diet. :(
