Modern Indian cuisine with California produce, creative cocktails

"Offering vegan and vegetarian tasting menus alongside a standard coursed meal, this spot channels chef Pujan Sarkar’s belief that vegetable-driven cooking is an underappreciated antidote to rising restaurant prices. Rather than chase imported wagyu, the kitchen makes a case for looking beyond beef, echoing Sarkar’s challenge to the next generation: it’s not enough to know every part of the animal — learn how to pull a flower from the ground." - Paolo Bicchieri
"On a dark Lombard Street corner, this high-class, stealth wealth Indian restaurant opened in spring 2024, with brothers Sujan and Pujan Sarkar bringing panache and purpose to the Marina. The allergen-friendly three-course tasting menus earn every penny of their $105 price point ($95 for vegetarian and vegan), though ordering a la carte is a great option. If splurging isn’t on the table, I prioritize the tandoori avocado, sporting big grill stripes atop a green chickpea hummus—an only-in-San Francisco, rare and inventive vegetable-friendly dish. Barman Izler Thomas’s cocktail menu is devoted to San Francisco’s neighborhoods; order the North Beach for a hit of sourdough and parmesan—it totally works—and the bar itself feels important thanks to Thomas. The vibe is deliberately a cut above the neighbors, with luxe green seats; a hostess will let you know if there’s room, and a private dining room is available. Best for something special—celebrate life, for god’s sake—because in the Marina there’s nowhere quite as cutting-edge nearby; show me another and I’ll eat my hat (read: another order of eggplant kofta)." - Paolo Bicchieri
"Tiya is a great upscale birthday option for a date. The swanky Indian spot offers a four-course $95 prix-fixe, making it one of the best-value tasting menus in the city. For a less confining option, a la carte is available in a separate dining room—both provide access to our favorite dishes here— like the yogurt chaat, butter chicken, and goat ghee roast tacos." - julia chen 1, patrick wong, ricky rodriguez
"At the edge of Cow Hollow, seasonal produce like squash blossoms, artichokes, and ramps bring a Californian edge to an intriguing contemporary take on Indian cuisine. Both à la carte and tasting options give equal billing to winners like a keema-style jackfruit with crunchy potato, or an eggless take on a bhurji roll, made with paneer and crispy kataifi. The elegant room adds an additional layer of sophistication, down to a well-appointed bar, which offers unique cocktails named in honor of San Francisco neighborhoods." - Michelin Inspector
"Tiya is a fancy Indian restaurant in the Marina that’s split in two. On one side is the stiffer white tablecloth-ed tasting menu room with a four-course $95 prix-fixe and on the other is a more casual a la carte area filled with bar stools, booths, and big groups. We prefer ordering a la carte and focusing on what Tiya does best: small plates. Get the goat ghee roast taco, the yogurt chaat with crispy potato and edible flowers, and the tiger shrimp xec xec dotted with gooseberry chutney. Reserve the tasting menu for a romantic night out or a special occasion." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez
