Behold! A New San Francisco Location of Luke’s Local Opens in the Inner Sunset | Eater SF

"Set to open Saturday, May 26 at the Napa Valley Museum of Arts & Culture in the former Dean & Deluca outpost on St. Helena Highway, this bakery-and-tapas concept from the team behind Michelin-starred Press — reported by the San Francisco Chronicle — will feature eye-popping dishes such as Wagyu steak tartare, caviar-topped lobster corn dog, croissants, mandarin mousse parfait, bacon-maple-glazed French toast stick, and much more. There will also be a butcher counter and wine shop, with a teaching kitchen at the café expected to open later in the summer." - Dianne de Guzman

Pastries are displayed as if art pieces. Clean, modern structure which you can peak through the exhibit at a next door museum through the small window. They share the patio area with the restaurant The Press. Drinks are well crafted. I will visit again when I am in the area.

Google
What an amazing bakery. Best croissant I’ve had in the area. The staff here were so nice and friendly, even informed us about some upcoming events. The chocolate chip cookie was super tasty but the almond cake was a little overpowering with the almond extract. I will definitely be returning to try more items.

Google
Wow! This is a very special place. Every item they sell is fabulous. The only gluten-free baked good was the chocolate chip cookie. But then, it's the best chocolate chip cookie you've ever had. There were also some gluten-free breakfast items.

Google
Incredible Cafe , unique to the valley and capitalizing on PRESS’ incredible talent. Incredible pastries , yellow fin crudo, roasted beets, truffle fries, trout roulet. Must try . Great staff .

Gerald Hall

Google
Michelin level bakery at the former Gary’s and Dean & Deluca location. It’s small with few options to enjoy their savory items on site. Great food and their cappuccino was great. but without the amenities and ambience like Bouchon or Models, it’s not a destination. It’s a high end expensive “grab and go” place behind a museum.

Sohini Bandyopadhyay

Google
This new gem of a cafe is part of our beloved Press. They share same seating patio for now. The food, attention to detail for food, impeccable service sets it class apart from most cafes.

Google
This is my new first stop when visiting Napa Valley. Chef Philip Tessier, of Michelin restaurant Press, brings not just another café to the Valley but a destination spot. Hard to say what my favorite item is, but the reinvented pain au chocolat with inverse puff pastry is a sure winner. Tessier's version of the Rueben sandwich, using puff pastry, is another. The lobster omelette is the best way to start the day. The wagyu tartare is out of this world! Everything is done to perfection with the same attention given to preparations at Press. And if you're a true croissant aficionado, but can't go to Paris, Under-Study is the place to go!

Google
The bread and tarts were on the expensive side, but they tasted amazing!! totally satisfied! The iced Americano and latte were great as well :)

Yelp
Exceptional experience First visit. Went there with my best friend. Who loved the place. Had some coffee, a baguette and some pastries. Great attentive and friendly service with knowledgeable hosts Small place. Really can use some seating to allow us to hang out and enjoy the food and drinks. Some high chairs on the tables inside might also help. I will be back frequently when I am here. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Marilyn T.

Yelp
A very kind friend brought us a few of their pain au chocolates, which comes as a long baton. Immediately, you notice the amazing lamination. For the first one, I ate it from the outside in just to capture all those crispy outer layer pieces. This is definitely the most unique "croissant" I've had - sort of like a churro crossed with a kouign amann and a chocolate croissant. Next time I go, I will have to try the Pain Suisse Reuben and the Lobster Caviar corndog that Cherylynn posted about!
google avatar

Yelp
LOVED! Such a cool vibe inside and worth stopping with some time to shop the bakery goods. The baked goods were out of this world and we can't wait to go back and try their food and sandwiches. The peach danish was just insane but make sure to get a chocolate croissant. So crunchy and light but perfect in flavor. The team was so friendly and helpful. You can tell they truly love what they do.
google avatar

Yelp
Good and convenient spot to stop by before or after your wine tasting adventures! I shared 3 pastries and my favorite out of them was the Pain Suisse Reuben. This came with house-cured American wagyu, pastrami, sauerkraut, cheese, and dressing. The pastry was very flavorful, tangy from the sauerkraut and flaky from the croissant. The other two I tried was the Breakfast Sandwich and Everything Knot. Pretty standard fillings but the croissant/bread is soo good and buttery.

Yelp
It is a bit simplistic to call Under-Study a cafe because it serves coffee, baked goods, breakfast, and lunch. Everything at Under-Study is interesting and creative. We came at about 10:45 am and ordered breakfast, including the chocolate croissant, breakfast sandwich, bacon sampler, and beef fat hashbrowns. The croissant is just like the one at Le Comptoir at the Ritz in Paris. The pastry is crisp and flaky and with an ample amount of chocolate running throughout. At 11 am, the menu segues to lunch, and the menu gets even more fun. We ordered wagyu skewers, pig ears, and got to try the viral lobster corndog. All of these were so good. The wagyu were these tender, delectable bites with an herbaceous topping. The pigs ears were neat, a bit crispy and very caramelized with a sweet, spicy, and sour sauce. The lobster corn dog was a luxurious treat, and apparently was heavily featured at Bottle Rock music festival this year, with a lobster sausage in the middle, and generous amounts of caviar topping it. It was a very fun treat to try. We ate inside the cafe but they also make the Press outdoor patio available as well. Staff was very attentive and warm. Overall, it was clear that Under-Study is so ambitious and aspirational as an eatery with delicious bites.

Yelp
Beautiful pastries in a cute spot! The food here isn't cheap, but youre paying for Michelin quality at a more affordable price. All of the pastries that we tried were delicious, and we even came back on another day to try more! Their pastry menu changes daily. The pastries were all delicious, but the sleeper hit for me was fried salmon skin. It's supposed to be a side for trout dip, but they let us just order the salmon skin and it was so good!

Yelp
Beautiful place. I went in and grabbed an hot chocolate and it was good. They have pastries and entrées as well. Next time I come I will try some of the other items on the menu.

Yelp
It's a really fun and chic, upscale cafe concept. The food was overall pretty good! Be warned the portion sizes leaned on the smaller side. It feels like tasting menu size which is great if you want to try lots of things but not a win for the wallet. There are just a few high tables inside, otherwise you can sit at the patio shared with Press restaurant, where you can also order food. Good service. Gorgeous pastries that look like artwork. CONS The price. The portions. $32 for a tiny lobster caviar corn dog ( I did enjoy it tho!). The French toast stick was just fine--I wish it had a crunch to it but it was all soft. The octopus was good but not WOW worthy. PROS The chocolate croissant is in stick form and it tasted great! We liked our iced vanilla and caramel lattes! The syrups are made in-house! It's a unique dining experience. The interior design is gorgeous. They have a butcher, caviar, truffles, and more. Its all super cool fancy food offerings. Now they're offering cooking classes, which I have yet to experience. TLDR: it's pricey for what you get, the portions can be small, but it's a fun unique experience. I'm glad I went and I'll be back again.

Yelp
My wife came here for a cooking class. As long time PRESS fans, we were very excited to visit and wanted to give it some time to settle so we could have the best experience. My wife loved her truffle making class (and I liked the box of candy she walked out with!). While I waited, I ordered a double espresso machiato and a couple of pastries. The space was beautiful and we even saw Vinny from last season's Top Chef (he works at PRESS) so that was cool. For some reason, they didn't have tables set up on the patio by the entrance but there were signs directing folks to the PRESS patio which is wonderful. I walked over and a few minutes later, a nice person came with my coffee and pastries. One thing I've always appreciated about PRESS is the maniacal attention to detail and Under-Study did not disappoint. It was just a delightful experience all the way around. I saw a couple of comments here about portion sizes or "leaving hungry." My take is that Under-Study is providing Michelin star-level bites and snacks that you can configure into a very pleasant light meal. If you're looking to strap on the ol' feedbag, check out Big Bear Diner but this ain't it.

Yelp
A friend told me about this place when I was at their house for dinner. They had this amazing Smoked Trout Rillette, a baguette, some cheeses they bought from here and they all were out of this world!! If I wasn't on a long drive home I would have bought that Trout Rillette; it was so creamy, but also fresh, citrusy, melt in your mouth deliciousness!! Everything at this place looks like perfection, straight out of a magazine, it doesn't even look real. I bought a chocolate croissant stick thing (no idea what it was called) and it was so delicious. It was flaky, rich, but also soft and doughy inside. Latte was also spot on. I can't wait until I'm back in town and they have their cooking classes started. Definitely will be going out of my way to come back here.

Yelp
Understudy in Napa is hands-down one of the most memorable pastry experiences I've had. Every item we tried was as beautiful as it was delicious. The lobster corn dog topped with caviar and drizzled with sauce completely blew me away--such a fun, creative twist on comfort food that still felt elevated and indulgent. It was easily one of my favorites of the day. The lemon loaf was another standout: moist, perfectly balanced with citrusy brightness, and one of those pastries you immediately wish you had taken home more of. We also loved the mandarin mousse, which looked exactly like a real orange--playful on the outside, but inside revealed layers of citrusy, refreshing flavors. The chocolate tart with its glossy shards of chocolate, and the almond tart with its delicate, nutty flavor, were both exquisite in presentation and taste. Every bite showcased the chef's precision and creativity. Not only were the pastries exceptional, but the packaging and presentation made the entire experience feel special. You can tell that Understudy puts as much thought into the artistry as they do into flavor. If you're in Napa, this spot is a must-visit. Whether you're here for something adventurous like the lobster corn dog or for a classic treat like the lemon loaf, you won't leave disappointed. I'll definitely be back

Yelp
Uhhhh a $32 Lobster Corn Dog? What kind of hella bougie millennial gimmicky ridiculousness is this?! I'll take 5! Opening this week is Michelin-starred, Press' new cafe: Under-Study at the former Dean & Deluca Building next to Napa's The MAC. We're here for their Sweet & Sour Pig Ears, my fav dish at Press but figure we try their signature snack as well, the Lobster Caviar Corn Dog. Under-Study is open for breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks. Fast-casual service. M E N U Breakfast bites (served until 11 am), apps/snacks, salads, sandwiches, vennoiseries, cookies, and jewel box desserts. Spritzers and wine available. S N A C K S * Sweet & Sour Pig Ears ($14) Deliciously crisp, chewy, and fatty with an addictive sweet & sour espelette glaze that was flavorful, punchy, and spicy (may be too spicy for some). Like crack. Not that I know how that tastes like. * Lobster Caviar Corn Dog ($32) This bougie snack got rave reviews from Bottlerock goers. A boudin-style "fun size" sausage made with fish mousse, steamed lobster, and herbs that's dipped in a GF batter and fried until golden brown. It's then topped with a remoulade sauce and Tsar Nicolai caviar. Slightly crunchy batter (a bit too thiccc tho) was a nice contrast to the bouncy seafood filling. The rich creamy tang of the remoulade complimented the sweetness of the filling with the caviar adding bursts of umami. TBH, it lowkey reminds me of Hong Kong style fish/seafood balls but sausage shaped. The lobster flavor kinda got lost into the mix. Glad I tried it once but wouldn't get it again. * Matcha Yuzu Cookie ($5) Gorgeous but looked better than it tasted. I My ideal cookie is crispy edges with a chewy center. This cookie was soft with a light earthy flavor, garnished with yuzu cream and matcha white chocolate (?) coins. Gripe: Wish they provided proper silverware. The compostable utensils broke when cutting into the pig ears. S E R V I C E Friendly and prompt during weekday lunch. A M B I A N C E Sleek and contemporary with playful touches (a bench modeled after a stick of butter), an open kitchen, and butcher counter. Several cafe mounted tables inside with plentiful tables outside. Most are high tops. P A R K I N G Ample free parking. Overall, Under-Study is an ideal pit stop for bougie snacks tho I wish they had more comfortable seating.

Yelp
From the Press Restaurant group in Napa, they have brought forth this amazing new bakery called Under-Study. This has taken over the former Dean & Delucca gourmet supermarket that used to be back in the day (RIP...those were good times!) This is a beautifully done location and the food is wonderful too. The pastries are just gorgeous to look at. We ordered the Pan Au Chocolate, chocolate chip cookie, and Blueberry Danish. ALL were amazing. The chocolate croissant was very flaky and buttery, and had such a fun shape to it, shaped long and skinny like a hot dog! So cute! The chocolate chip cookie was nice and soft, and had great quality chocolate. The blueberry danish had a really nice cream filling - nice and rich, pulling you into one more bite. All pastries were so delicious!!! This place is brand new, so service seemed a little off, but really not that bad. They just seemed a little out of place. They will get there, I'm sure. This is a wonderful place to stop by and get pastries in between wine tastings and for gifts for your friends on the way home. Napa Valley needed a new bakery, and I'm so glad they're here!!

Yelp
First visit to Understudy did not disappoint. We dined in the covered patio behind Press and it was a fresh, cool, pleasant environment. The service is friendly and the food was delicious. My breakfast sandwich was among the best I have had. Looking forward to the next visit.

Yelp
Upscale bakery vibes with unique pastries. We ordered the lobster caviar corn dog and a chocolate cookie. Service was friendly, and you place your order at the cashier. There are only a couple of high tops, so it's not really a spot to hang out for long. The lobster corn dog was interesting, you could really taste the lobster, and it didn't resemble a typical corn dog. The chocolate cookie was just okay for me, but if you're a big chocolate fan you might enjoy it more. The black iced tea was refreshing. Overall, nothing really stood out, I'll have to try different pastries next time. There's a cute museum next door and a giant stick of butter that makes for a fun photo.

Yelp
Came here during the weekday, no wait time. I was able to order quickly and food was promptly brought out to our table. Plenty of parking outside with tables inside and outside for patrons. My matcha latte was a bit bland and watered down, tasting mostly of milk. Chopped salad was tasty, it comes lightly dressed with herb dressing and bread crumbs provided a pleasant extra crunch. I admit the lobster corndog is kind of gimmicky, but I had to try it. The flavor was a bit bland and not as savory as I'd had hoped, I could have gone without ordering it, but my curiosity got the best of me. Where Under-study really shined was their pastries! Oh man, the pain suisse reuben was delicious and flakey. I had a similar pastry at Paloma NYC and this one was far better. The matcha cookie was soft and chewy and the flavor of the yuzu cream pairs well together. They had so many other small pastries and cakes that looked amazing detailed. I would love to come back and try them all.

Yelp
Don't believe the haters best cafe overall in California Great coffee roaster Matcha great space for improvement with the ratio. Love that they offer 8oz option. Ice tea delicious Food is so good and fresh and well made very consistent on the flavor already went back 10/15 times and always on point. Deli on point had lots of the item and can't complain Design wise love the material selection and color palette! Make it all fun and cool People that complain about prices I please ask you to come join us in Los angels and see how much it will cost what you get here! 10/10 but I am sure that lots of people can't appreciate greatness P.s this is not a paid partnership!

Alex A.

Yelp
This is exactly what the area so desperately needed. To-go options, amazing coffee and the ability to pick up high quality meats to take home and grill. My favorites so far are the chicken sandwich and the caviar corndog and the pig ears.
google avatar

Meg W.

Yelp
Checked out this brand new spot that's only a month old. Food & drinks were delicious! We had: Coffee - great! They only offer either 8oz. or 16oz. I wanted neither size. Get it right please and offer the standard 12oz. cup. Lobster egg dish - Rich, buttery and so yummy. Avocado toast - it was good, creamy but I prefer a more organic texture of avocado vs whipped avocado toast. Fruit Danish - soooo good! The fresh fruit is the star and the creamy filling was perfect, not too sweet. We sat in the patio of Press, their fine dining sister restaurant next door. So lovely. Overall, we really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend. Tip: We arrived a little before 9a and it was mellow. About 5 minutes later, a huge line formed. But service is fast.
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
AMAZING pastries--absolutely the best this side of Paris! The seasonal fruit danish deserves a better name because it's far more than just a danish. Flaky, delicate layers cradle a vibrant fruit compote, all topped with a luscious cheesecake custard and vanilla chantilly. Truly unforgettable. Another standout? The Pain au Chocolat. It's cross-laminated to perfection, filled with rich 70% dark chocolate. Decadent, refined, and totally addictive. If you're anywhere near St. Helena--GO. Then come back and tell me your thoughts!

Yelp
Wow! We had an unexpected lovely lunch today at this special addition to the Napa Valley! Each dish we had exceeded our expectations. The service from each staff member was friendly, responsive and fast! The lovely Kate was delightful! We appreciate meeting the events coordinators, Brigette and Vanessa to inquire about brining a women's Daytrippers group for a monthly outing in November. They were receptive to requests and after taking my contact information to help us plan a lunch for 10-12 people before or after visiting the MAC museum next door. We really enjoyed being able to sit on the Press patio, such a lovely shaded location. We are looking forward to our return soon!!
google avatar

Melany M.

Yelp
My oh my what a beautiful place! I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. I had seen pictures beforehand but was still shocked! Beautiful color scheme and display of 'example' pastries made my mouth water instantly. I also appreciated the floral decor and having front row to my matcha being made. They also offered some local fruit for purchase. They had a great brunch menu it looked like so, I will be back to try this!
google avatar

Sandra H.

Yelp
This is a very good place to get a quick bite, coffee, pastries, breakfast, and lunch bites. Breakfast items until 11am. We were in and out within 30 min at 11:30am in a Tuesday. Adjacent is the MAC museum. High stool seating side and covered bench seating outside. Plan to go back and try breakfast.

Yelp
Food was soooo delicious! Got the tuna crudo (mindblowing) , a latte and a chocolate chip cookie. Everything was perfect. Clean and well decorated, polite, professional and friendly staff. Loved the outdoor seating! Have had the lobster corn dog at bottlerock and it was also to die for. Will definitely be returning soon! Only took a picture of the cookie because I was so hungry I forgot to take more!

Yelp
Pretty good Small portion There is definitely room for improvement in terms of portion size. I cannot believe I paid $32 plus tax for a lobster caviar hot dog and my husband got octopus truffle mole for $18. It did NOT fill us up. We're on our way to GOTTs for some burgers.
google avatar

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place. I already knew that I wanted to order a lobster caviar corn dog. it sounded amazing in my mind but I don't think I was in love with the taste. Im not sure if it was the sauce or the combination just didn't go together for me. My husband had a hard time choosing what he wanted from the menu because so many things sounded good. we both ordered iced teas. They were very flavorful, and they were Earl Grey. it had a distinct taste. the desserts all looked beautiful and I had a hard time deciding whether I was going to get the dessert with a Ferrero Rocher or the Mandarin mousse dessert that looks exactly like a mandarin. I decided to go with the Mandarin because it's almost summer. I loved it because the inside was not too sweet. it tasted kind of like a sponge cake with a tiny bit of mandarin jelly/puree. My toddler loved it.This is such a chic place to stop by when you're driving through wine country. Also, there is a new art museum right next door!

Yelp
Absolutely fell in love with this place. Everything and u do mean EVERYTHING was spot on. Service was super friendly with a smile, pastries were AMAZING, we sat outside and it was wonderful and we got checked on a few times. Will definitely be back soon for some more! That lil strawberry thing blew my mind! And the croissants were just perfect, def some of the best I've ever had and I get croissants all the time!

Weiyi R.

Yelp
My husband and I got to the cafe on a Monday at around 12pm, and the business seemed a bit slow, we were the only people there. We ordered coffee and two pastries. I saw all the pastries were left on the display counter without any cover which was interesting. We sat down at cafe's sitting area, expecting to taste super delicious pastries from this famous bakery in St Helena. but no, big surprise, both pastries we had ordered: the raspberry pastry and plain croissant were very dry and hard. I had hard time trying to use a knife to separate a piece off my raspberry pastry to eat, it was not like a fresh pastry to me, I think maybe the pastries we got were just being sitting out on the display counter for too long. Very disappointed.

Dominique C.

Yelp
Amazing service by professional and friendly team! The patio is incredible! They bring your order at the patio The coffee is delicious ...!!! We took some delicious bread Elegance and so gorgeous pastries ... a pleasure for your eyes Do not miss this place ..... A GEM

Yelp
We've had tickets to The MAC to visit the Julia Child exhibit and we were thrilled when Under-Study opened so we could give it a try! We were especially excited when we saw the Julia Child 3-course prix fixe menu item. We visited on day 3 of being open! Everyone in our party of 5 were ready to order this fun theme item, only to find out that this is now served on the weekend only (please update the menu to avoid disappointment). We each scrambled to order something different and shared a few of the desserts. The chicken sandwich was prepared well, served hot and perfect portion. All items were served on silver trays- including shared and not shared items. The fries came hot, but quickly got cold as they were served on the silver tray. All 4 desserts (mandarin mouse, lemon tea cake, chocolate Rocher Choux and Pistachio Financier and we also added Pain au Chocolate) were wonderful & easy to share. We will come back to try breakfast and will make sure we're there on the weekend for Julia's menu! All of the servers were very attentive.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing!!! Stopped on the way to Calistoga. Had the Lobster butter omelette and the hash brown in beef tallo... OMG!!!! I will be going again to try some other items. The menu is creative with quality ingredients. It's where the Dean and Deluca used to be and tucked behind the Mac Museum.

Natalya N.

Yelp
The food and pastries here are a fantastic example of the kind of magic that is created when everybody on the team is driving towards the goal of perfection -- smoked trout rillete was obscene. There's no stuffy atmosphere or hint of arrogance in the service at all and instead just extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and very hard-working staff. The lobster corn dog was delightful, the octopus was so good and I don't know what was going on with the sauce for the french fries but I'm still thinking about it.

Jaime R.

Yelp
Want to impress on a quick coffee date? Looking for food with high quality ingredients? So glad we made a detour for this place. We ordered Cappuccino, chocolate croissant, breakfast sandwich, and avocado toast... The manager came out with an order of biscuits and gravy because she felt the food was taking too long. That was a total surprise because we weren't even close to feeling forgotten. Everything was delicious (especially the B&G). We left so much food unfinished, because of the quality ingredients used, we were stuffed. Will 100% be back when I have an excuse to drive thru the area.

Kris H.

Yelp
We tried this place on a whim. So glad we did! The people are all wonderful, the atmosphere is friendly and adventurous, and the food was delicious and beautifully plated.

Jonathan L.

Yelp
The place is very nice and the food is amazing! Pretty bougie! Staff is very nice and accommodating and seating is good.
