14 of the Very Best Pizza Places in New Orleans

"Making up one of the city’s best blocks for true Italian cuisine, Carrollton Avenue’s Venezia is a Mid City staple, an old-school eatery serving red gravy, stuffed shells, and chicken marsala. The pizza is terrific, sort of a New Jersey-style pie, and comes in classic combinations. Angelo Brocato’s next door is a must-visit for a post-pizza gelato." - Clair Lorell, Eater Staff

Since 1957, this Mid‑City stalwart has served old‑school Italian and classic pies steps from Angelo Brocato. Eater New Orleans calls the pizza terrific—think Jersey‑style rounds, checkered tablecloths, and true neighborhood tradition.

Lets start with the appetizer. We chose the fried calamari, it was a perfect contrast between the crunchy exterior and the slightly chewy, briny interior. it was not greasy at all. In short: crispy, tender, savory, and a little addictive I ordered the 8oz filet mignon cooked medium well, and it exceeded my expectations. It came out with a beautifully seared crust and a warm, slightly pink center—exactly how I like it If you like your steak cooked medium well but still want that melt-in-your-mouth texture, this is the way to go.

Alberto and Kevin took great care of us on my birthday. It’s always a pleasure coming here, the food is consistently amazing, great atmosphere, and it was my grandfathers favorite 🩷. Get the osso bucco if you get the chance

Google
Venezia on Carrollton nails classic Italian comfort food. Grabbed a couple of seats at the bar to relax and have a casual meal. I’m a spaghetti and meatballs person, so that’s what I had. Loved the red gravy, and the meatballs were tender and well seasoned. Added the Italian salad and some garlic bread…absolutely top-notch meaI. Also recommend trying their cannelloni with a side of panéed veal. This combo is a must. Off-the-charts good! If you love Italian, you definitely need to check Venezia out. 🇮🇹

Google
I ordered a house salad which has to lettuce, tomato, artichoke, Kalamata olives, provolone, and salami, along w/ an order of cheese bread. This food was miserable! The salad primarily contained iceberg lettuce and a hint of each ingredient, minus the olives(I didn’t request). The salad was considered a full sized salad and not a side! My food was picked up by the time they said it would be ready (15min) but my cheesy bread was cold and old. How????!!! I gave it a 2 star bc the staff was nice when I called about my order and I was able to send them a video of my food. They offered to give me another salad when I order there again. I don’t plan on doing so in the future bc their food isnt that great. Side note: I didn’t use a delivery service for this order.

Came in at 5pm, place started to fill up a lot around 6. Server was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. Fried mozzarella is a must, also got the garlic bread, baked ziti came with a lot of meat, and caesar salad had the dressing combined. Decor is nice here and every table had a red rose, great for a date night!

Google
This restaurant was a lovely escape from the uptight in and out joints my friends and I have been frequenting. It felt like home! It had a mom and pop feel but an upscale vibe. Cozy atmosphere with thoughtful decorations adorning the walls. Our service was exquisite. Our server checked in on us multiple times throughout dinner and approached us with respect and enthusiasm. He was friendly and we loved him! He always knew exactly what we needed and made us welcome. The manager even checked in on us partway through dinner and asked if the room was too cold - a touch that made me feel particularly special and at home. Onto the food! I ordered the chicken panne with fettuccine Alfredo. It was delicious and a large portion. Everything that I desired in an Alfredo - creamy, cheesy, and al dente noodles. The chicken was wonderful as well. It was pounded thin and then baked and fried (I’m assuming) and was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. We also had garlic bread and cheesy bread for the table. The garlic bread was nothing special and could have had a bit more effort and ingredients. The cheesy bread was better. The dipping sauce for both had great flavor. My friends all enjoyed their dishes as well. They devoured fried mozzarella, lasagna, meatballs, and more fettuccine Alfredo.

Google
A classic restaurant if you are in New Orleans! The red sauce is delicious and we always enjoy our experience. Pierson was a great server !

Google
Absolute Italian staple in New Orleans. Tonight was the Redfish Cynthia, but typically, I get the Veal Ponchartrain. Both are next level. Don't sleep on their steaks, the best valued steak in the city!

Yelp
Food & service was amazing! Our server, Ace, was wonderful. He made our experience a great one! Highly recommend going, but make sure you call for reservations.

Yelp
Tried the new Gretna location tonight. Had a delicious dinner! https://blainerestaurantreport.com/2019/09/07/venezia-new-orleans-la-report-228/

Yelp
This place has huge portions! Definitely a place to share your meal. We started with spinach dip, it came with bread instead of chips and we didn't like it. Got the filet mignon and fries. It wasn't cooked the way I liked so they took it back and made it right. My sister got the pasta and she liked it.

Yelp
After a long search for the best Italian restaurant in New Orleans, I finally decided to try this place, but it turned out to be a big disappointment. The waiter, who was very friendly and attractive, unfortunately wasn't very skilled. She made several mistakes, but I tried to be understanding given her apologies. Our troubles started when we waited 30 minutes for the garlic bread, which was just okay. When the main courses arrived, things went from bad to worse. My partner ordered spaghetti with meatballs and Italian sausage, while I asked for penne with meat sauce. Instead, my partner received spaghetti with meatballs but no sausage, and I got penne with sausage instead of meat sauce. After sending my dish back, hoping to get the right meal, I was served penne with meatballs again, which was incredibly frustrating. Meanwhile, we were still waiting for the side of sausage for my partner. When my correct dish finally came, it seemed like they just added more sauce and chopped up the meatballs to pass it off as meat sauce. To top it off, when we asked about the missing sausage, we were told it was unavailable because there were none thawed out, despite the restaurant being busy and having likely prepared stock. When we asked to speak with the manager, a man named Alberto (or Al, as I'll call him) came over. His apology was insincere and he offered no real solutions or compensation. The bill we received was far from worth the poor food and service. I regret not sticking with the other Italian restaurant (Mandina's Restaurant) I initially considered.

Yelp
Loved loved my experience here! Came here on a Saturday night and it was pretty packed . Make sure you make reservations if not you will be waiting, especially on busy nights. So we started with the fried mozzarella . I also got the cannelloni and then my friend got the shrimp pasta. So so good. Loved the atmosphere. Our waitress Lacey was amazing. She was attentive, kind and great with her recommendations. If you're looking for Italian this is the spot to check out .

Yelp
Thought I would try the take out pizza. Disappointed in the toppings. Artichokes were tiny and not alot or well distributed. The sauce was the star with good flavor but overall not worth the $20.
google avatar

Renee W.

Yelp
Just as cozy and lovely as I remember. Our server Ace was amazing and the food great except the pizza that I have loved since my youth was disappointing. Very few toppings as i remember and the mushrooms I literally thought were a garnish. I hope they do better with their pizza because the other food was fantastic.

Yelp
The service with Eduardo was excellent. He immediately greeted us when we were seated and took our drink orders. We started with the fried calamari and it was delicious. Perfectly crispy and paired with a superb marinara sauce. Next up was the entree which we decided to share because the portions are huge. We went with the Veal Supreme. It was excellent and perfectly cooked. It was a paneed veal topped with a crawfish and shrimp cream sauce. There was so much shrimp and crawfish that you practically couldn't see the veal and that's a good thing. We ended with a cannoli, compliments of Eduardo. It was perfectly crispy but so creamy on the inside. Topped with crunchy pistachios and 1/2 cherries on each end. This restaurant is a New Orleans staple! No tourist traps at all. This is where all the locals go to get a fabulous Italian meal! Ambiance is lightly lit with true Italian vibes and music!! Don't skip Venezias....you will never be disappointed!!

Yelp
The service was really good considering how busy they were on a Saturday night. I couldn't remember our servers' name but he was so nice. I ordered the meatballs and garlic bread and they were soooo good. I also had the fish Cynthia.

Yelp
I was craving Italian and my husband suggested this wonderful gem tucked away on Carrollton. I was transported to my mom's kitchen in Italy. It was my first time there and Kayla helped me to navigate the menu with a smile. Thanks Kayla!!!! The service was spot on....and I loved the soft music in the background: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin... We ordered seafood stuffed mushrooms, spaghetti and meatballs, Veal Ponchartrain, house salad. It was so much food!!! I tried everything!!!!! I will be going back for the Chicken Marsala and tiramisu and coffee next time.
google avatar

Romy H.

Yelp
Very family Italian ambience , great service and food !! Huge portions! Sometimes it takes a little time to wait for the food but always delivers and everyone feels satisfied.
google avatar

Lynncal B.

Yelp
I'm very disappointed with the portion size. The pan is small (2 in pan) and is the size of a hot pocket. And not the hearty man kind!!! To have experienced a far bigger, better cannelloni, then to get this feels like deception. I feel cheated and played. With that said it was still delicious!

Dm S.

Yelp
The food taste like it came right out of a packet mix. Worst Italian food we ever had. They didn't even have fresh Parmesan to grate. I would never recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Venezia is a family owned Italian restaurant that has been around since 1957. And when you are there you truly feel that you are in someone's home. Nick, Tammy and so many others were so inviting and made you feel so welcome. They have so many regulars and generations of families that have been coming and I can see why! Some of our favorites were the spinach ravioli, their Monday night Surf and Turf special and spinach and veal stuffed cannelloni. And y'all don't even think about skipping on dessert! I love tiramisu and theirs is

Shelby B.

Yelp
Yes to the chicken marsala no the shrimp scampi meatballs the best add riccota cheese and ceasar salad great too!
google avatar

Beverly B.

Yelp
Zoey is the bestest!! I ordered Monday's special and that crab cake... chef kiss. They are so welcoming and the food is absolutely amazing. Everything was well seasoned and piping hot. They take care of you and I know why they been open for so long. I will be back!!!

Yelp
Apparently they opened a couple weeks ago and tonight they had the ribbon cutting for the new location. It still looks almost exactly like Tony Mandina's which I've always loved so that was an easy win. It's definitely not the same place though. The service and food leave a lot to be desired! We were on a double date and I'm positive the company and our bottle of Bella Glos were the only things that saved the night oh and the spinach dip. The veal and pasta were dry, the steak was way over salted, the fish was cold and luckily the shrimp weren't too bad in my scampi but I left an entire bowl of pasta! The service wasn't great but she seemed young and the least of their problems after this meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything in the menus is wonderful!!! Pizza Cannelloni Veal All fantastic The service is amazing!

Yelp
The food here probably used to range from a 2 to 3 star depending on what you got but they have really improved and have gotten up to a solid 3 and 4 star average on my last visits. The worst thing I ever ate here back before Hurricane Katrina was a seafood lasagna that was so bad I couldn't eat more than a few bites of it. The regular lasagna, manicotti, spaghetti, eggplant dishes, and parmesan dishes are usually good. They currently have the best cannelloni in town to my taste. They generally have decent pizza and even better pasta. The best thing about this place is that you typically get good value and large portions so you will definitely never go away hungry after a meal here, however, you should save some room for dessert at nearby Brocato's after. My video review of Venezia Restaurant is here: https://youtu.be/CVaBRMCYhPE

Yelp
Small place been around forever. Service and food were good but we had to wait for over an hour for our food to come from the kitchen

Drew D.

Yelp
The blonde waitress (Kayla) was super sweet/a perfect waitress; however, the old lady that was the hostess was incredibly rude. We ate here at 9 pm on December 12th,2024. Would have given more stars had the old lady not set a bad mood. She asked how many people in our party and we said "8" she looked at us like she was disgusted and sad sometime rude comments. Of note, we left at an appropriate time.

Marilyn B.

Yelp
This is for the Westbank location. I ordered the house pizza to go. The flavor was good, but the toppings were very skimpy...mainly the mushrooms and artichokes. They had maybe 1 whole mushroom sliced on the pizza and a few specs of artichoke. Paid $25 and was disappointed. I will come back to dine in, but I will order something else.

Yelp
We had early reservations since my SO was running a race in the morning. The waitress came by to ask for drink orders and my SO said he would have a water and we would like an order of cheese bread. She ran off without asking if I wanted anything other than water and I had to catch her to ask for my tea when she was passing by later. Our food came and boy have the portions shrunk. My cannelloni were majorly dried out on top and there was hardly any filling and sauce. I remember barely being able to finish half of one and I easily ate a whole one. Two things that majorly bugged me: they charge a fee for using a card and I don't remember seeing that anywhere on the menu or on their website and I'm thinking there may have been cross contamination in the kitchen because I started breaking out in hives while eating my main course and we did not order anything that contained shrimp. I ended up having to take Benadryl when we got home. We used to enjoy going here but will probably be switching it up in the future.

Yelp
Quite the experience! We had the in-laws in tow and decided to try Italian for a change. Venezia had been in my try list so we decided why not? We were lucky to get a table right away because they were very busy on a Friday evening and it seemed most people had reservations. They sat us in the front by the door which was just fine. The excitement came when the young man bringing us water accidentally dumped all the water all over the table and us. It was cold!! Hey it happens to all of us and they handled it well. They were very quick to pick up all the ice, dry the table bring us dry menus etc. They were very apologetic and the young man never missed a beat - kudos to him. we had the meatballs and cheese as an appetizer, they were good but a little bit too close to the lasagna I ordered, tasted pretty much the same in fact. The lasagna was served like I like it in lots of red gravy, it was delicious and I would eat it again but the sauce was just a bit bland to me, I prefer a little more spice/tang to sauce. The chicken Marsala was good too but again was missing a bit of flavor. We will go again but next time I think I'd prefer to sit at the bar and order one of the delicious looking pizzas I saw others being served. Someone please tell that young man that we all have our bad days and give him a pat on n the back for me.

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant in New Orleans. I drive an hour just to eat at this restaurant. The service is never bad and the food is always great. I can't recommend this place enough. Then, after you eat your appetizer and main course, save room for dessert, and walk a few doors down to Angelo Brocato.
google avatar

Peter T.

Yelp
One of my regular stops when I lived in New Orleans, I am also happy to get back and have a great dining experience. Cautionary note: servings are huge. I love their meatballs, so spaghetti and meatballs was on deck for me. Couldn't finish it. We also had garlic bread and a couple of starters. Halfway thru the meal, I noted the waiter toting the "antipasto for four" to a nearby table. Wish I would have ordered that. Service is prompt and courteous. It's a small room with an adjacent bar, so make reservations or get there early.
google avatar

Laura I.

Yelp
Everything about this place is amazing. First My dad s favorite place and now mine! So excited they opened a westbank location. Trying that next!!
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Food was good but man as others say- The service is horrible Forgot the apps Which was fine- It was this! The lady gestapo with the clipboard that runs the floor is rude as hell-unless she knows you it seems Doesn't seem to care for certain people and I'll leave it at that Idk Don't get the hype

Greg M.

Yelp
We went to the new location on the West Bank. We had cannelloni and a pizza. Both were excellent. We didn't make a reservation but got there just at the right time, because it got super busy, and seems to be pretty busy always. Ambiance was great tables were not too close together.

Jack S.

Yelp
We went on a Sunday and were there when it opened. Our order wasn't taken until 30 minutes after we arrived. The food was not served until 90 minutes after we arrived. I had to go to the bar to get our check. The food was OK but not getting your food for 90 minutes is crazy.
google avatar

Joe P.

Yelp
Ordered a filet MEDIUM RARE and it came out extremely WELL DONE. I sent the steak back and the second one they brought was RAW and absolutely tasteless. I'll put it to you like this, I wouldn't have fed it to my dog. The Italian food that we ordered was sub-par. Service was mediocre at best. Ambiance was tired. I left hungry and aggravated. Bottom line is we'll never be back. There are much better options for both steak and Italian in this city.
google avatar

Alexandra E.

Yelp
When you walk in to Venezia's you definitely feel like being in an Italian grandma's restaurant. The greeter was nice and the waiter too! They had $6 martinis (can't go wrong) and we started off with that. I ordered the fried calamari and fried eggplant sticks. They weren't my favorite appetizers. I also got the Eggplant Vatican with a side of Alfredo pasta. It had good flavor. It also had a side of red gravy which was nothing special; nothing I couldn't do at home. My friend ordered the Fresh Fish Almandine which had a really good dill sauce. The food was not bad and it's good portions and good prices but it's not the best quality. Also, the food wasn't as hot as I would have liked it to be. I would definitely come back to try their pizzas and give it another shot.

David C.

Yelp
I have been coming to this restaurant since I was a child. The food is always excellent and the service has always been great however, tonight was a big disappointment. We were basically asked to leave at 6:45pm after we had been there a total of an hour. My husband was finishing his drink when the maitre d' asked us to move to the bar. I would not have minded however, I had my 3 children with us. There were several empty tables and no one was waiting. I have never been treated like this. We will find a new restaurant.
google avatar

Brandi K.

Yelp
Had the most amazing Birthday dinner for my niece at Venezia! The ambiance there - everything comes together to make you feel warm & welcomed. Alberto, Rob & the whole staff made us feel like family. EVERYTHING was delicious as always - the spinach bread, steaks, fried eggplant, you name it...we loved it all!! Thanks to everyone for making it such an extra special experience.
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed, terrible service, extra charges added, after receiving the bill for services not performed. Appetizer of calamari was over fried to a crisp bland mess.

Katalea F.

Yelp
Be prepared to be sat 2 hours after your reservation with little to no remorse. We had a 8pm reservation but were sat at 10pm because an employee and their acquaintances' 6pm reservation ran over and the restaurant did not serve their meal til 8pm (aka the time we were supposed to be sat). They then sat us at two different tables, despite having a reservation for 2 weeks. There was no apology for seating us so late, and separately. They did comp one round of drinks, luckily most of us are alcohol free so a cheap cost to pay for poor planning.
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
Best neighborhood , family, special occasion restaurant. Family run, same stellar staff and great bar if you wanna eat there. Excellent ! Perfect

Martha S.

Yelp
Food horrible- no specials, server could not recommend anything. The ambiance was dark and freezing. Only reason I have 2 stars is because the server was very pleasant (first day of training.)

Yelp
CAUTION!!! Decent (okay) reviews but we had meals that were not very good. Started with ice tea and Arnold Palmers....was like colored water...very weak. Ordered for starters garlic bread...came out AFTER the meal was served, and they should have called it 'garlic 'salt' bread' ... it was pretty bad! Had one piece and left the rest. I ordered the Veal Parmesan ... it was just okay , I cut away the badly burnt edges, and noted it was not very hot when it arrived . Wife ordered the "Fish Cynthia" (which was topped with shrimp and crawfish in a dill cream sauce). Looked nice...but it came out disappointingly lukewarm (almost cold). Sent back to heat up. Second time around and the first real bite , noticed there was NO seasoning, it was VERY bland. She tried another bite and it got no better. Put it to the side and could not eat any more. But what was worse than that!...the manager came over after awhile and asked her what was wrong (seeing the full meal put to the side)...wife told her , and the mgr.'s ONLY response was "that's too bad...it's one of my favorite dishes ". AND WALKED AWAY, taking her dish. No 'sorry can we get you something else?' , Or 'we will take it off your bill' , or even a 'can we get you a desert?' would have been a welcomed response! NOTHING!!!....for basically an untouched , and not a cheap meal that my wife reluctantly gave feedback on when asked. Disappointing food AND response, and from the mgr.. Needless to say we would never go back, and certainly would not recommend.

Tracy N.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday night with my SO. It was very busy and there were a lot of people on the waiting list, but we were sat pretty quickly. We loved seeing the owner on the floor seating tables and talking to guests. The food was amazing and decently priced for the large portions. Our favorite was the seafood stuffed mushrooms. The service was great, fast and informative. We had a great experience and would definitely come again!

Yelp
My husband and I (Papa and Nonna) had lunch here with our 2 grandsons and our daughter in law after a busy, but wonderful morning at City Park. Such a sweet place--pizza was delicious--simple, very good pizza. Big bountiful salad. Server was great, so was service and it was packed to capacity. The owner came over and check in with our kiddos. He was a sweetheart too. When I saw 1957 opening, I knew it had to be good. Grazie, Venezia!

Henri C.

Yelp
Veniza's continues their high standards. I got the pizza and it was incredible. While the crust was very crispy and seasoned perfectly the star of the show was the sauce. It was sooooo good. A little spicy with a rich tomato sauce that compliments all the add ons. Just the right amount of cheeses. Good mix of mozzarella and Romano. The wedge salad was perfect. Very crispy which is the only reason to eat iceberg but the blue cheese dressing was excellent, light and tangy with that blue cheese vinaigrette finish. Excellent service as well . Very welcoming. I went early so it wasn't that crowded. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Shanita F.

Yelp
I will start by saying Italian isn't my favorite type of food because generally I think only two dishes I ever order lacks flavor. Accordingly, take this review with a grain of salt, but it is certainly my truth! We made a reservation for dinner, but I don't know if that's required. They were very busy on a Sunday night around 6:30 pm so I would recommend it. We were seated near the back, close to the bathroom and bar. The waiter was slammed but did her best. We started with a small salad and fried eggplants. The eggplants aren't cut in discs, they are cut more like sticks or wedges. They were nicely breaded. They are served with a too small serving of marinara sauce. I ordered the eggplant parmigiana and again, the eggplants were good. The spaghetti was so bland and flavorless. The spaghetti serving was so large and I didn't eat most of it. I couldn't eat it the next day so I ended up throwing it out. The garlic bread was also too hard.

Daniel D.

Yelp
This place is GREAT and a go to spot for locals. No one should take the advice of the female Chalmation and her terrible review. Or Florida trash DeSean commenting on the physical attributes of a server in a food review. Ordering blueberry mojitos at an Italian restaurant?! Then getting mad because it was an old post from long ago?! Too bad they don't have an Olive Garden in Chalmette.
google avatar

Wendy B.

Yelp
Bad service and food. Waited to get seated while server and the host argued for 3 minutes. Once finally seated the appetizer came out on time but took forever to get entree. Both of our entrees were sub par. I had panne chicken with Alfredo. See picture and explains everything. This was our first time there and we will never go back
google avatar

Marsha R.

Yelp
I'll keep it compact....service terrible, dirty restaurant, dirty silverware, everything a la carte, food low quality...never again

Ivette L.

Yelp
I'll just stick to the facts Apps: Eggplant sticks - soggy Meatball w/ ricotta - delicious Cheese bread - good Entrees: Shrimp Scampi - terrible - I ate about 3 shrimps and 2 bites of pasta and called it a day. Chicken Alfredo - daughter had a few bites and just stopped eating. This is normally her favorite dish when we eat Italian. Stuffed Shells- nothing to write home about. Panned Chicken - the person who ordered that loved it. We had two other people, I cannot remember what they ordered but no one wanted a leftover box. Service: Slow I have never been a fan of this restaurant but it had been quite a few years since I've eaten there and it was my nieces birthday so we went hoping for the best. There are just better places. This place is definitely for people who like quantity over quality.
google avatar

Reggie M.

Yelp
The food was very good, but there was a lack of service and communication. Our salads were brought to the table 10 minutes apart. My wife ordered a tomato basil soup, which she was informed when our entrees were brought that they were out. Luckily, my daughter and I were able to share our plate. Another disappointment was the vegetable side.. It came out as a pile of dry green beans with no seasoning. At least the wine didn't disappoint.

Yelp
Ok where do I begin? If you're expecting an Italian restaurant that tastes like mama's or Nonnas. Nope this is not your place. I took my friend for his birthday along with another friend of mine. Ordered the apps and a round of drinks. They list Blueberry Mojitos as a drink on there cocktail menu on Facebook. There was not a cocktail menu when I arrived and no blueberry mojoito. They do not have l serve Lemoncellos a well known drink for Italian cuisine. They suggested a lemon drop martini which was horrific. Or apps finally arrived 30 minutes into dinner, the seafood stuffed mushrooms. No plates were given to us by our server although I asked. Our spinach and artichoke never came out until we tried to grab our server who was completely overwhelmed. And stated "oh I forgot to tell you, we don't have that" about and hour and fifteen minutes later we received our food. COLD! I ordered veal Pontchartrain that after one cold bite was dry and horrible. The pasta was flavorless!! I actually ordered it to add capers which was clearly not added. Although one manager who ended up knowing my guest tried to express her I'm so sorry. They ended up only compensating my meal and the drinks. My two friends ate a few bites but also had cold entrees. Needless to say not how I expected to celebrate my friend. The other guests were clearly getting frustrated as well. It was a horrid experience and I would not recommend this place at all! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!!
