"A group of runners from the Berlin athletics clubs, SC Charlottenburg, organised the first BERLIN-MARATHON in 1974. It was not until 1981 that the race moved from the Grunewald (a big forest) into the city. The BMW BERLIN-MARATHON has developed into one of the world’s best quality road races. A staggering total of 12 world records have been broken and more than 45,000 runners join every year. Eliud Kipchoge (KEN) smashed the world record in 2018 by running 2:01:39. In 2022 the greatest marathon runner in human history came back to run another stunning world record, lowering it to 2:01:09. A sensational course record was set by Tigist Assefa (ETH) who ran the race of her life and won in 2:15:37."
