KAI Kinugawa

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? While many of the KAIs in Hoshino's onsen ryokan portfolio are former hotels that have been souped up to luxurious standards, the Kinugawa property is a fresh build and embodies every tenet of the company's fervent dedication to all things traditionally Japanese: kaiseki multi-course meals, beautiful hot springs, plenty of outdoor space to take in the surroundings, and even classes about local ceramics and other artisan crafts. What's the backstory? This is one of the finest hotels in Hoshino's coterie of KAI stays. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? The private bath, fed by hot springs, is a delightful way to end the evening. It's only a few feet away from your Western-style bed. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Free wifi. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? As per most ryokan-style accommodations, breakfast and dinner are included. Evening meals are a veritable parade of fresh produce; ingredients don't veer away from an international standard of excellence. The sashimi and tempura will surely delight. And the service? As with most Hoshino properties, the service is always uber-professional, but the staff can sometimes be a little less formal. What type of travelers will you find here? Wealthy Japanese weekenders. Any other hotel features worth noting? Bathing naked—and tattoo free—is taken very seriously here, and at all Hoshino properties. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? This is one of the best KAIs in Japan." - Brandon Presser
