The Canopi

"How did it strike you on arrival? There’s a special customs counter for guests glamping at The Canopi at Bintan Ferry Terminal when you arrive, which means no queuing with the rest of the crowd. Then it’s a five-minute bus ride to the resort, where you see a clutch of 41 rather stylish Mongolian-style canvas gers. Each has its own veranda and glass doors, clustered around a filtered, brilliantly blue seawater lagoon. Where’s the wildlife, you ask? The closest thing you get here are creature comforts—this is urban glamping targeted at city slickers, silly. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Couples and extended families. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.A regular tent suite, which was kitted out in chic cream and brown safari-style furniture, a four-poster bed, and a private outdoor bathroom with a plumbed toilet and shower. There was also air conditioning and an LCD TV. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?It wasn’t very well made but was comfy enough—the mattress was firm and the pillows gave adequate support. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase?Loved the side table by the bed which looked like a travel trunk—who wouldn't want that in their room? Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The semi-open tiled bathroom was lined with large plants and there was a rain shower as well as a handheld one. Water pressure was decent though temperature wasn’t the most consistent. The mosaic-tiled sink had a stone basin and a cute copper tap. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Yep, decent speed and free. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. There are two restaurants on property—an all-day one and a seafood restaurant, where the food is average and pricey. There are plenty of activities suitable for kids at the Activity Center, like water slides, bouncy castles, and firefly cruises. The lagoon serves as the pool. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? You get a taste of camping without having to rough it out, plus there are all sorts of activities to keep you busy. Bottom line: worth it, and why? It’s a unique experience that’s an easy journey from Singapore." - Audrey Phoon
