"Shokudou brings izakaya cooking to Bernal Heights in chef Stewart Chen’s playful take on what he calls Japanese pop food. The room leans casual, drawing lunch crowds for steaming bowls of ramen and small plates. At night, the grill is the main attraction: negima (chicken thigh and Tokyo negi, a long Japanese green onion), kawa (chicken skin), and gyū-enoki (beef and enoki mushrooms). Come after 5 p.m., when the skewers set the tone and Shokudou shifts from neighborhood ramen shop to full izakaya." - Antony Fangary
