"I was drawn to the new Northern Italian eatery opened by Riccardo Michi in late March on the corner of Lake & Carpenter; located at 1023 W. Lake Street, it serves country fare that leans heavily toward carbohydrates. The menu features four types of focaccine including the “classica” with prosciutto di Parma, baby arugula and truffle oil and the “asparagi fonduta e uovo fritto” with asparagus, fontina fondue, truffle carpaccio and a fried egg, plus a handful of risotti such as risotto del pescatore with seafood and shellfish and risotto alla monzese with sausage ragout, braised onions and tomato sauce. Pasta offerings range from gnocchi with oxtail ragout and pecorino to linguini with manilla clams in white wine sauce and pork and cabbage ravioli with bolognese, fontina and parmesan au gratin; there are six different takes on veal scallopini as well as numerous pesce and carne entrees. A wine list isn’t available online and management hasn’t commented, though the restaurant appears to have a full bar. The large dining room is filled with tables and a few booths behind a long bar with backed stools; natural light filters through tall windows to balance dark wood furnishings and exposed brick, and diners toward the back can watch meals come together in an open kitchen. The concept nods to traditional osterias—simple food with wine—while offering more elaborate, locally minded dishes and an emphasis on hospitality." - Naomi Waxman
