"In a new 3,500-square-foot space designed by Shirley Azzghayer with Studio KDA, I visited SOMA Eats' second location near the Embarcadero at 121 Spear Street and found a larger hybrid cafe and bar that leans into Middle Eastern influences: rich turquoise tiles, copper fixtures, a central bar divided by a large wooden arch, and unusually high ceilings. One side of the bar has table seating while the other houses a huge fridge with a selection of 400 beers; the bar also offers 9 beers and 6 wines on tap plus low-ABV cocktails (happy hour is planned later). With a full kitchen the menu expands beyond the original spot’s salads, snacks, and sandwiches to include new bowls such as a lamb tagine with olives and dates over preserved lemon couscous and a lentil protein bowl (romaine, cabbage, radishes, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, mint, pita chips, and caramelized onions over braised lentils and bulgur); prices range roughly from $9.50 to $15.50. The owners—Azzghayer (Palestinian) and Mannaa (Lebanese), who also run Soma Wines & Spirits—aim to serve breakfast and lunch (opening Oct 10th) with full-service dinner and an extended menu coming in the following weeks, and they outfitted the space with speakers, a large projector, and other tech to accommodate corporate event bookings." - Caleb Pershan
