"Originally launched as a collectively owned dining experiment run equally by five friends in a restaurant space at Wabasha and 7th Street in downtown St. Paul, Just/us offered an unconventional mix of burgers and fine dining. After losing that location when the building’s owners decided to restore the building and sharply raise rent, the team launched a GoFundMe to relocate and in May 2019 reopened in an expanded, polished space across from the St. Paul Farmers Market in the former Golden’s Deli; the remodel was done mostly by hand but added a bar, stage, and meeting/event space and brought on a new investor. Reopening in December 2019, the eatery aimed to be a neighborhood gathering point, operating a no-tipping model that paid its employees a living wage and serving as a music and art space reflective of the neighborhood. The sacrifices made to survive COVID while operating via takeout and delivery made that vision for the location unsustainable, and when it next reopens it will do so without any of the founding chefs and with a reconfigured space. Update February 10, 2021: Just/us has reopened." - Joy Summers
