"When Kroger and Albertsons announced plans to merge two years ago, I noted the deal would create the second-largest grocery retail chain in the country behind Walmart and immediately drew criticism that the consolidation could lead to higher prices and reduced pay and benefits for workers; the FTC and state attorneys general in Washington and Colorado have sued to block the merger. To try to win regulator approval, they proposed divesting hundreds of stores (579 total) to dilute market power and have repeatedly promised that the divestiture plan would prevent closures, preserve frontline employment, maintain existing collective bargaining agreements, and keep industry-leading health care, pension benefits, and bargained-for wages." - Harry Cheadle
