"Planned to open at the end of the month to replace neighborhood sports bar McCarter’s Bar & Grill, The Pioneer is a new barbecue restaurant from Carnitas’ Snack Shack founder Hanis Cavin and partner/chef Willie DePasquale. The team has temporarily been running the existing bar with a limited menu and hours while breaking ground on a mostly-cosmetic refresh; Philippe Beltran is spearheading a design that leans on old-world elements and one-of-a-kind vintage pioneer items. The kitchen will be fueled by a Southern Pride smoker and will turn out fresh batches of traditional brisket, ribs, and chicken daily, with Ivan Munoz consulting on the barbecue program. Smoked meat will also be incorporated into appetizers such as brisket flautas and rib croquettes, alongside over-the-top burgers, and the bar will feature 14 taps mixing macro and craft beers plus an accessible cocktail program with $10 craft cocktails." - Candice Woo
