"In the former Astro Coffee space at 4884 Grant River, I found a newly opened, health-conscious cafe owned by developer Philip Kafka that has made a raw, chilled carrot a signature item — sold individually for $1.80. The carrot plays a central role in the shop’s branding (a small carrot yard decoration out front, carrots stamped on the packaging) and is prepared with a hefty commercial-grade peeling machine that peels each snack individually. The menu’s “Something Quick” offerings include other curious, single-item snacks priced the same: the Daily Dice (two single Brazil nuts), the Ottoman Secret (a Brazil nut wrapped in a dried fig), and a date-ensconced walnut. Kafka says he sources carrots from local farms and Whole Foods and recently planted more carrots across the street on property he owns, but longtime residents tell BridgeDetroit that the cafe does not address the community’s need for affordable, fresh food options given limited nearby supermarket access." - Serena Maria Daniels
