"The annual three-day fair in Gilroy, billed as “the world’s greatest summer food festival” and held every year since 1979, draws nearly 100,000 visitors and celebrates California-grown garlic with attractions such as garlic ice cream, cooking competitions, and live entertainment. Beloved locally—city councilman and festival volunteer Peter Leroe-Munoz called it “our crown jewel”—the event was the site of a mass shooting on the final day this year. Around 5:41 p.m., as the festivities were winding down, gunfire rang out and videos show attendees fleeing the tent-lined grounds; at least three people, including a 6-year-old boy, were killed and 12 more wounded. Within a minute the shooter was shot and killed by officers, bringing the total fatalities to four. Police say the gunman appears to have crossed a bordering creek and cut through a fence to bypass security, was dressed in a military-style outfit and appeared to carry an assault rifle, and based on witness statements they are searching for a possible second suspect; as of early Monday the crime scene remained active. The attack was recorded as the 244th mass shooting in the U.S. so far this year." - Jenny G. Zhang
