"A popular street food vendor that got its start as a food truck in a liquor store parking lot on Grape Street in South Park is gearing up to open a sit-down restaurant in Mira Mesa: Shawarma Guys plans to roll out its third San Diego–area location at the Village at Mira Mesa complex by the beginning of August. Owner Bryan Zeto launched the business in 2018 and quickly gained national attention—landing on the Food Network and atop national food lists—before opening a first storefront in April. The menu features rotisserie-cooked chicken, Australian wagyu, and a vegan shawarma all marinated overnight with a spice blend of garlic, allspice, cloves, and nutmeg and served with housemade garlic sauce, sambal chili sauce, hummus, tabbouleh, and yellow basmati rice; customer favorites include the chicken cream chop, falafel, shawarma jalapeño egg rolls, and Middle Eastern wraps made with a tortilla instead of a pita. A relatively new creation is a shawarma cheesesteak (available in wagyu beef, chicken, vegetarian, and vegan) topped with caramelized onions, jalapeños, and bell peppers—something they originally struggled to make in quantity on the food truck's small grill—and fresh additions to the Mira Mesa menu will include Australian wagyu beef kebabs marinated with kiwi. Zeto also intends to keep expanding, aiming for a fourth outpost by the end of the year, perhaps in Carlsbad or Eastlake." - Helen I. Hwang
