"A North End Italian restaurant whose owner, Patrick Mendoza, has been charged with assault to murder after allegedly opening fire outside a nearby famed bakery on July 12. Police say Mendoza was riding a bicycle on Hanover Street, swore at alleged victim Rocco Giovanello, pulled a gun from his waistband and fired two shots; Giovanello was not hit. Mendoza remains at large as of Monday and had been on probation following a December 2022 assault-and-battery conviction involving the same individual. Authorities say the dispute dates back to 2019, when Mendoza allegedly struck Giovanello with a glass bottle and, along with his brother, punched and kicked him in the street. Earlier this year he was also one of four North End restaurateurs who joined a lawsuit challenging the city's North End outdoor dining fees and filed an amendment accusing the mayor of bias; that suit was dismissed this summer." - Erika Adams
