"At the corner of Thompson and Prince streets in the old South Village, M & O Market is a deli that sells groceries and beer and has a rear counter where hot and cold sandwiches are prepared from a large menu hung on the back wall; its hot roast beef hero is legendary. One standout is the Portuguese roll — a squat, torpedo-shaped bread with a slit along the top, often delivered from bakeries in Newark’s Ironbound — and the menu even lists Portuguese chorizo (more properly “chourico”) first among the “Meat Sandwiches,” offering it on a roll for $7. The hard sausage, like a large-bore salami with little splotches of fat and a winey, funky savor from the dry-curing, is thin-sliced into a great sandwich dressed with mustard, olive oil and vinegar, or, as I did before the COVID-19 shutdown, with mayo; the sandwich maker piles on the sliced sausage and heaps lettuce, tomato, and the shop’s wonderful provolone, so both the Portuguese and Italian aspects of the neighborhood are represented. I’m pleased to report M & O is still operating — order on Seamless or by calling (212) 477-8222 — and don’t forget to ask them to put in one of the little custard pies called pasteis de nata; the market is also known for house-roasted deli sandwiches, piri-piri chicken, and for being the only market that sells Joe’s Dairy’s fresh mozzarella." - Robert Sietsema
