"The Ellis Hotel (formerly the Hotel Winecoff) in downtown Atlanta includes a tragic chapter in its history. It’s the site of the deadliest hotel fire in the United States. On December 7, 1946, 119 people perished after a fire ripped through the hotel on Peachtree Street. The fire began at 2:48 a.m. and lasted for nearly six hours.
