"Fortunate Son is the first place in the Metroplex to offer the crispy, fire-roasted, thin-crust New Haven-style pizza. The best move here is to go for the unexpected and try a pie with toppings that strike you as left of center. The potato and pancetta somehow mimics the taste (but not texture) of potato soup on a pizza pie; the chicken and gorgonzola and sausage and peppers pies also satisfy. Located on the Square in Downtown Garland, this isn’t the kind of place you order from to take home — it’s a place you’ll want to sit in and watch the world outside go by for a while. Large front doors and windows that look out onto the renovated green space of Downtown are often open when the weather is nice, and the patio occasionally hosts singers. This spot is owned by the folks who have Goodfriend Beer Garden and Package store, so those frozen drinks, deep and weird beer selection, and the nice wines they’re known for can be found here, too. Best for: Meeting up with friends and family, casual dates, and solo meals while reading a book at the bar. It’s multifaceted." - Courtney E. Smith
