"I'm glad to see British-Japanese comfort food returning to Portland: Kalé, which developed a cult following for what Portland Monthly called "a fusion curry-stew-ish thing" served with rice, closed earlier this year after renovations pushed them out of their original SW Morrison home and will reopen this fall at 50 SW Pine Street. Owner Makoto Yoshino serves several renditions of the signature British stew—kalé rice—whose base uses a mixture of ground vegetables, garlic, turmeric, cumin, and other spices and is sometimes cooked down with proteins like beef or smothered in cheese; the "definition of kalé rice" is served with beef or chicken. The new 21-seat space, designed by Neal Harrod (formerly of the Ace Hotel), will also offer the restaurant's popular "sidekicks"—salads and pickles—and be paired easily with beer, wine, and sake." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden
