"Founded in 2002 as a single Mission bakery, this world-famous, rapidly expanding brand became known for around-the-block lines and for pioneering the recent artisanal bread and pastry movement; more than 140 Bay Area employees recently signed a letter declaring their intention to unionize in hopes of attaining a fair balance of power, quality benefits, high morale, and good wages, and if successful some 200-plus Bay Area employees across four locations would join the local International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU).
