"Set in a colorful former private residence perched above the Walk of Fame, the Magic Castle operates as a restaurant, live-entertainment venue, private magicians’ club and magic school that can be hard to get into: guests pay to enter (starting at $25), must buy dinner (one entrée per person is required) and adhere to a notoriously strict formal dress code to dine in the Victorian parlor–esque room. It’s not exactly known for its food, though the recent addition of chef Jason Fullilove has given it some new life; the real wonders, however, are the shows and the kitschy, place-appropriate décor spread across theaters and rooms. The décor is charming and gothic, with every wall covered in arcana, newspaper clippings, posters and portraits of long-gone performers—an odd googly-eyed portrait will even seem to follow your gaze menacingly—while the revelry inside is loud and drunken and any spills are absorbed into a dark, patterned carpet." - Farley Elliott
