"Opening this spring at Northeast D.C.’s Union Market food hall, this fast-casual counter is Eric Adjepong’s first solo project and a vehicle to showcase West African–influenced roti flatbreads and doubles. The signature doubles feature a spicy cumin and turmeric fry bread layered with curried chana and aloo (chickpeas and potatoes), and Adjepong tops them with pancetta, a spiced Calypso sauce, and North African chermoula—“almost kind of like a chimichurri.” Bowls come with either fried doubles or baked roti and protein options such as chicken yassa (a lemony dish from Senegal), curry goat, coconut curry shrimp, or stewed beef, with sides like jollof rice, fried plantains, and collard greens. Drinks include tamarind lemonade and sobolo, described as “this really deep, magenta purple-colored drink, made from dried hibiscus.” Adjepong expects checks around $16 to $18 with sides and drinks, hopes to open in late April or early May, plans to spend plenty of time at the stall (which will replace the Arepa Zone counter), and says the project is his “baby” and a way to showcase the African diaspora through roti and doubles." - Adele Chapin
