"On September 1 at noon, a coalition of restaurant workers and activist groups will gather outside the office at 5001 Spring Valley Road to protest the expiration of expanded unemployment benefits and Congress’s inaction. Organizers from Restaurant Workers United, UNITE HERE Local 23, North Texas Democratic Socialists, and Dallas Stops Evictions plan to stage a mock eviction to dramatize people losing their homes and furniture being thrown onto the curb, and to draw a direct link between the growing eviction crisis and the financial fallout from the pandemic. Their demands include reinstating the $600 supplemental weekly unemployment payment, federal coverage of 100% of COBRA premiums for unemployed restaurant workers, and a moratorium on evictions. The event follows a similar July 24 protest after the expanded benefits expired July 31 and will also host a drive for tents, sleeping bags, and other necessities, with donations accepted in person or via a GoFundMe to help people in need of temporary shelter." - Brittanie Shey
