"Originally founded in Nolita in 2012, I note this NYC slice shop is known for drawing long lines for its Neapolitan pies and its signature Sicilian square 'Soho Squares' and is expanding to San Diego, taking over the former Mariscos El Pulpo space on Market Street in the Gaslamp early this year. It's best known for its Sicilian pizzas, like the best-selling Spicy Spring (fra diavolo sauce and spicy pepperoni) and the Vegan Square (vegan cheese, marinara, and fresh basil), and also bakes round Neapolitan pies such as the Boozy Broome (vodka sauce, prosciutto, and fresh mozzarella) and the Oakey Smokey (original pizza sauce and smoked mozzarella). Though the pizza remains popular and the brand has several branches in the Los Angeles area and an outpost in Miami, I also note the chain faced significant controversy in late 2020 after food blogger Joe Rosenthal called out racist comments by founder Frank Morano (including slurs used against Asians) and a now-deleted Facebook post from his son Dominic that mocked Black Lives Matter; following Eater NY coverage and backlash the Moranos issued a public apology and stepped away from operations in January 2021, though they still own the company." - Candice Woo
