"I'm aware that Chick-fil-A, a fast-food chicken chain known for its anti-gay politics and problematically delicious chicken, is seeking a new Bay Area location that could replace the McDonald's at 536 Whipple Ave in Redwood City, and San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa is encouraging protests and urging that they withdraw their permit so the chain not do business in the county. The company has been criticized since 2012 when its CEO publicly criticized gay marriage, and a ThinkProgress report this year revealed donations to charitable groups that discriminate against LGBTQ people — revelations that have cost the chain airport deals in San Antonio and Buffalo. A San Jose airport location opened despite backlash, prompting an apology from the mayor and protests in which demonstrators vowed to make the site “the gayest in America” by positioning rainbow flags in front of the business. Chick-fil-A has not directly addressed questions about the Redwood City expansion; a company representative responded to the San Jose protest by saying, “We do not have a political or social agenda” and that “We embrace all people, regardless of religion, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity.”" - Caleb Pershan
