"In SoMa, I found a neighborhood-y, no-frills sports bar run by Jerremi Clark that’s struggling to cover an $11,000 monthly rent; Clark owns multiple businesses and, while approved for grants and loans, is still waiting for funds. To keep things afloat Trademark is leasing its kitchen to fried-chicken spot SF Chickenbox (splitting beer and liquor profits), selling to-go drinks, and offering gift cards (100% of proceeds go to its 16 laid-off staff; patrons have bought roughly $1,500). Clark hopes to use a patio that fits 46 more people but has been denied a Conditional Use Authorization after prior noise complaints shut patio access; he’s also deeply worried that the neighborhood’s thinning office workforce will decimate weekday foot traffic. Despite the uncertainty, he’s optimistic people will want to watch games in bars once stadiums are closed to fans and says he’s willing to pivot the concept to survive." - Shane Downing
