"Opening on Friday, September 8, Clandestino Mex Street Food will be parked on the patio of East Austin venues Volstead Lounge and Hotel Vegas at 1500 East Sixth Street. Its menu focuses on Mexican comfort food with tacos as the main offering and additional dishes such as tostadas, quesadillas, and tacos dorados. Co-owners Alejandro Macias (from Monterrey) and Jennifer Camacho (from Ciudad Juárez) created the truck to center their Chicano identity and to “celebrate immigrants and immigrant food,” and they chose the name Clandestino both for its Spanish meaning of something hidden or kept secret—reflecting complicated immigration experiences—and to evoke the fleeting permanence of street-food vendors. The truck’s posted hours are Thursday 6 p.m.–midnight, Friday 6 p.m.–1:30 a.m., Saturday 3 p.m.–1:30 a.m., and Sunday noon–6 p.m.; the owners also reference recent pressure on street vendors, noting instances such as New York City sanitation forcing Latin American street food vendors to close." - Nadia Chaudhury
