"Newly renovated and re-dubbed as the Mission Bay Beach Club, the iconic Mission Bay Visitors Information Center has returned to its original purpose as a gathering space for locals and tourists; the curvilinear structure overlooking the bay was built in 1969 by San Diego’s Richard “Dick” Lareau and, after decades of varied uses (from the heart of Mission Bay tourism to an unmanned vending area, storage and a public bathroom), sat derelict after being decommissioned in 2010 until this year’s restoration. The building now sits under a mid-century spire and was modernized by Bradley Schnell of Playground Design and Kristine Overacre of Beaucoup Creative in partnership with the City of San Diego and the Mission Bay Parks department, with programing that includes an all-vegan coffee shop (Superbloom), a bike rental and beach boutique at the back, and a prime bay-facing curve slated to become an all-day wood-fired pizzeria and wine bar next year; the gentle slope toward the building is planted with an urban vineyard that Schnell and Overacre hope to press into a house wine." - Kelly Bone
