"On the main drag of Alexandria’s family-friendly Del Ray neighborhood, a new spot opened at 2419 Mount Vernon Avenue that focuses on on-site pasta and a range of pizzas with crusts that swing from thick to thin. I describe a menu that expands on sibling Café Pizzaiolo: New York-style pizzas by the slice, hefty square Detroit-style pies, flatbreads, baked wings, spaghetti and meatballs, stuffed portobello mushrooms with broccoli rabe, eggplant parmesan, and salads topped with grilled shrimp. There are snow cones for kids and frosé for adults made with a new frozen drink machine at the bar. For now Piece Out is prioritizing takeout—using a roll-up garage window and packaging everything to go because of COVID-19—while offering limited seating (about 100 interior seats and a 20-seat patio); opening weekend hours were 3–9 p.m. (lunch to start the following week at 11 a.m.). Owner Larry Ponzi (who also owns St. Elmo’s cafe and Markt2Market) gutted and rebuilt the kitchen, kept reclaimed wood paneling and pops of red from the previous tenant, and plans to grow the menu over time with ideas like steaks, daily ravioli, branzino, and more seafood, though he is holding off on mussels because they "won't travel well." - Tierney Plumb
