"Confirmed to Eater, The Human Bean — an Oregon-founded espresso chain that started in Ashland in 1998 and now operates 72 locations across ten mostly western states (most locations are in Oregon and largely franchisee-owned) — is opening on NE Sandy, likely taking over the former KFC at Sandy and 49th Avenue. I'm told it's mostly an espresso place offering the standards (lattes, Americanos) along with a range of sweeter, mocha-centric options with straightforward names and descriptions; it isn't a third-wave cafe but sits in a more grab-and-go, drive-thru-focused category compared with local players like Stumptown or nearby Case Study, and most Human Bean locations are drive-thru only with only a tiny number offering on-site seating. Despite its relative success in the state, it has never before set foot within Portland city limits, previously sticking to suburbs such as Beaverton, Hillsboro, and Clackamas." - Tim Forster
