"Opened in late June on a busy stretch of Ventura Boulevard, Casita Mexican Restaurant & Bar comes from the same owners who opened upscale robata spot Taisho across the street and occupies the former Pearl District space in Sherman Oaks after a three-month revamp that relied on non-permit changes like glass accordion windows facing the boulevard, natural woods and whitewashed walls—giving it a beachy feel despite being more than 15 miles from the coast. The menu reads like many Southern California Mexican spots with mezcals, beer, wine and margaritas alongside guacamole, chile relleno, tostadas and elote-style street corn, while Chef Adam Titze added a raw mariscos bar with ceviches, yellowtail crudo and Kumamoto oysters, a flaming panela cheese, whole snapper with salsa verde, sala roja and charred citrus, and a risotto-like bomba rice with coconut milk and lobster; A5 wagyu tacos for $42 are sure to raise eyebrows, though there are far more affordable tacos available. Owners Christian Corben and Paul Carroll shepherded the launch, notable investor Anderson .Paak is involved, brunch will be added later in the year, and current sit-down hours are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Do not confuse this Casita with the longstanding La Casita Mexicana." - Mona Holmes
