"Shut down on March 15 along with its sister pub, Samuel Beckett’s in Shirlington moved to takeout and delivery (noon to 8 p.m.) and is offering comforting Irish classics such as fish 'n chips, flatbreads, chicken pot pie, bangers and mash and corned beef; instead of activating delivery apps, Kirwan and his Virginia manager typically deliver corned beef orders for free. The owner has been dropping off free Samuel Beckett’s meals to local ER staff, police, fire houses, and animal rescues and matched phone donations (from $25 to $1,000) to fund first-responder fare, though contributions are drying up. Despite keeping eight upper managers to handle to-go orders, revenue is barely covering utilities, about 100 employees were laid off across both restaurants, and Kirwan says he has tapped his savings and cut policing hours to focus on keeping the Shirlington pub afloat." - Tierney Plumb
