"Expanding from Wilmington, North Carolina, Bitty & Beau’s Coffee is set to debut as part of a Charleston expansion and will host a grand opening and ribbon-cutting on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. inside a former pet boutique at 159 Church St., across from Tommy Condon’s Restaurant. Founder Amy Wright, who launched the concept in January 2016 and has four children—two, Bitty & Beau, were born with Down syndrome—started the shop to help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities find steady jobs; the cafe is staffed by a very enthusiastic crew that includes people living with autism and cerebral palsy. An immediate hit, the uplifting success story attracted CNN’s attention and earned Wright the 2017 CNN Hero of the Year title. In addition to its upbeat, safe-space atmosphere, the shop has received raves for its casual menu of hot and cold beverages, smoothies, pastries, and breakfast snacks and burritos; the new location will occupy 975 square feet, and while future hours haven’t been revealed, the original is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m." - Susan Stapleton
