"At the McDonald’s franchise on Conant Street in Detroit near Eight Mile Road, I found employees and worker Darnell Harris expressing deep concern about safety: he and several coworkers walked out on April 27 as part of a Fight For $15 demonstration, saying many staff were working without proper protections and risking spread of coronavirus to coworkers and customers. Harris, who has worked there on and off for more than two years and lives with his sister and 1‑year‑old niece, says the kitchen is crowded — “at least eight or nine people” — the drive‑thru has gotten busier, and he feels he has “no choice but to work” despite fearing he might bring the virus home; he reuses a surgical mask he purchased himself and says management hasn’t asked him to get screened at the nearby State Fairgrounds testing site. Franchisee Sonja Shields told me the location provides non‑medical‑grade masks and gloves, conducts wellness and temperature checks at shift start, installed protective panels, added social‑distancing guides, and has “enhanced hygiene practices,” but during my visit I saw printed “No face mask, no service” signs, yellow social‑distance markers, a Plexiglass guard, and five employees in view with only one wearing a cloth mask properly while others wore masks improperly or on their chins; staff said masks had been provided for a little over a week but were uncomfortable and that they felt the environment would remain safe so long as customers wore masks." - Brenna Houck
