"At its Fort Point site (12 Farnsworth St., Boston), I note that Flour Bakery & Cafe—officially listed as Cakewalk Bakers LLC—opened there in 2007, seven years after the original South End location, and has since grown to seven locations around Boston and Cambridge with an eighth opening soon in the Seaport. I report that Cakewalk filed suit in Suffolk Superior Court on August 30 against building owner New Tower Trust Co. (the Bethesda-based trustee and investment manager for the $6.5 billion Multi‑Employer Property Trust), alleging New Tower breached a noncompete that Berkeley Investments had agreed to when it sold the property by leasing adjacent space to a competitor; Flour claims the lease to Mystic Market Kitchen & Eatery—whose menu and price point Flour says are substantially similar—would cause irreparable damage. I also note Flour previously allowed the now-defunct Bee’s Knees Supply Co. into the building because its retail-leaning model did not pose a direct competitive threat, and that as of press time Flour owner Joanne Chang and other parties had not commented on the lawsuit." - Terrence Doyle
