"In the back corner of that mall sits the Woolworth Diner, a fully operational former Woolworth luncheonette that I found still serving police officers, antiquers and locals daily — and which is described as the last Woolworth luncheonette counter in America. It retains 22 counter seats, spiffy Formica tables ringing the room, an open kitchen for griddling burgers and making milkshakes, original light-up Woolworth’s Luncheonette signs, and creaking metal chairs while staff move about in black-and-white outfits. The menu is simple and inexpensive — burgers and a chili dog with sides like fries, baked beans or macaroni and potato salad, plus milkshakes and root beer floats — with nothing coming close to $10, and period signs advertising five-cent Coca-Colas and ten-cent sandwiches reinforce the five-and-dime history." - Farley Elliott
