A New Menu to Support a Chinatown Business Affected by the Mega Jail | Eater NY
"Featuring a special “A Seat at the Table” prix‑fixe menu created by Chinatown historian, cookbook author, and activist Grace Young, Pasteur Grill & Noodles is offering a $44-per-person menu (with all proceeds going back to the restaurant) to draw attention to how the Chinatown mega jail is “swallowing” local businesses. Launched last week and available Wednesdays through Fridays, reservations must be made 24 hours in advance by phone with a minimum of two people per party; the offering will continue as long as the rebuilding of the Manhattan Detention complexes “continues to threaten the community and its local mom and pops.” In addition to its regular run there will be two special dinners on November 16 and December 1 where Young will be present alongside community leaders from Neighbors United Below Canal and Welcome to Chinatown. The restaurant sits at 85 Baxter Street directly across from the Manhattan Detention Center, currently under construction, and Young emphasized that after the compounded effects of 9/11, the pandemic, AAPI hate, and now the mega jail, these businesses need support to ensure the Chinatown we know and love survives and thrives." - Emma Orlow
