"Revamped from the former Fitzgerald’s on Cathedral Hill, I found The Fitz — opening at 3 p.m. today — completely refreshed and much brighter: white walls, plentiful large high‑definition TVs (the open kitchen is now hidden behind a TV wall), green plants hanging from the bar, and even the once awkward, dark Salt Cellar and back room revived with a fresh coat of white paint for a beachy, welcoming bent. The menu, overseen by Justin Sutherland with chef consigliere Donald Gonazalez and Fitzgerald’s Graham Messenger, is stacked with different pizza styles (each pie named for a location and marked by its latitude and longitude), including three deep‑dish varieties named for Chicago neighborhoods that are already gaining steam and a serious contender for the best deep dish this side of Michigan Avenue; thinner crusts with both classic and fancier toppings are also available. Other new dishes include ribs, a new version of the spot’s popular burger, and a fennel-and-endive salad unlike anything I typically see at a pizza spot, while cocktails—named for world explorers—lean into tiki flavors." - Joy Summers
