"Closed in 2000 after 45 years, this legendary Mayfair hotel grill is being revived and is due to reopen in early 2020 under award-winning New York chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The 46-seat, ground-floor dining room will be a modern interpretation of a classic grill with an open kitchen, wood-burning grill and rotisserie, and a menu focused on largely British-sourced produce — highlights include langoustines, Dover sole, British game, seasonal vegetable dishes and a rotating daily special — while the wine list will draw from the hotel’s very senior cellar. Interiors, designed by John Heah, will offer a contemporary nod to the restaurant’s distinguished heritage, featuring bespoke organic wood wall panels, tables and chairs crafted by the Nakashima workshop in Pennsylvania under Mira Nakashima, with an emphasis on art and craftsmanship. Owners say the restoration aims to bring back the old-school charm and mythical status of the original while updating it for a new generation, including homages to classic dishes such as the theatrical “Oeuf en surprise,” and it will sit alongside the chef’s eponymous restaurant and a two-Michelin-starred dining room by Hélène Darroze within the same hotel." - Adam Coghlan
