"A debut cafe founded by D.C. natives and former high school classmates is arriving in Union Market this month: The Village Cafe plans a soft opening on Tuesday, October 9 and a grand opening on Tuesday, October 23. Founded by Kevon King, Mahammad Mangum and Ryan Williams—who met at Woodrow Wilson High School—the cafe aims to serve locally-sourced coffee and daytime fare while creating a hub for underserved entrepreneurs. It will offer sandwiches and pastries featuring local ingredients (final menu forthcoming), serve coffee from two-year-old Southeastern Roastery, and later add handcrafted cocktails, wine, and beer. Planned programming includes sign language classes with Gallaudet University, healthy-eating panels, children’s story time with bookstore neighbor Politics and Prose, career-skills workshops, an alumni panel from Wilson High School, and more." - Tierney Plumb
