"After a 20-month remodel and six months operating temporarily out of a ballroom, Arterra Restaurant and Lounge reopened with an all-new look and a fresh menu as part of a broader hotel revamp. Opened in 2002 and described as a 17-year-old institution, the restaurant was founded by James Beard Award–winning chef Bradley Ogden and local chef Carl Schroeder; for the past five years executive chef Evan Cruz — a San Diego native and California Culinary Academy alum with experience at Roy’s La Jolla, Pacifica Del Mar, and the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club — has led the kitchen, while sushi master Andrew Hoh presides over the sushi bar that sits within the restaurant’s circular cocktail bar. A few holdover favorites remain for locals and happy-hour regulars — shishito peppers, empanadas, ribs, and truffle‑parmesan fries — but most of the menu is new: starters such as Parker House rolls, beef tenderloin tartare with roasted bone marrow, and soft-shell crab with coconut curry sauce, and entrees ranging from a 36-ounce aged tomahawk steak to scallops with sea beans, peach, carrot, and yuzu, plus a summer barbecue–inspired bone-in short rib served with corn pudding and warm potato salad. The spot markets itself as luxury dining with a creative, California-inspired menu and signature cocktails." - Candice Woo
