"A multi-level restaurant and music lounge opens Thursday on the Lower East Side — with strong New Orleans vibes through French Cajun fare, a colorful, plush space, and live music and events. Canary Club, at 303 Broome Street between Forsyth and Eldridge streets, has multiple spaces dedicated to eating and entertainment, including a dining room and supper club space on the ground floor and a live music lounge and dance club in the basement. Food comes from chef Tadd Johnson, who was last the executive chef at the Smile. He’s put together a menu of dishes such as roasted oysters, pork and clams with crawfish butter, and seafood boudin on toast that pull inspiration from Louisiana classics. There’s a wood-fired oven that comes into play in other dishes, such as a whole roasted squab and eggplant with green olive, chives, and rouille sauce. Drinks incorporate absinthe, bourbon, and liqueurs in options. One called Persistance of Memory combines blanc vermouth, pamplemousse, sherry, and prosecco." - Stefanie Tuder
