"On track for full demolition, this 32,000-square-foot seasonal outdoor stage at the Avant Gardner complex at 140 Stewart Avenue in East Williamsburg has remained shuttered since 2024 following a last-minute cancellation of its 2025 season due to permitting issues. Regulators criticized it over safety issues, including what they described as drug use and deaths due to overdoses; two concertgoers were also found dead in Newtown Creek after attending events there in 2023. The venue was supposed to open in conjunction with Smorgasburg’s planned food-vendor hub, the Campsite. According to Gothamist, the demolition application follows Avant Gardner’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, with up to $500 million in liabilities and less than $100 million in assets, while two smaller venues on the site, the Great Hall and the Kings Hall, remain open." - Melissa McCart
