"Danny Elmaleh worked for SBE for years, designing modern Moroccan and eastern Mediterranean flavors at Cleo and other large-scale restaurants before opening a humble hideaway in Sherman Oaks called Mizlala. The menu’s been streamlined into an array of proteins like falafel, chicken shawarma, lamb and beef kofta, salmon, and merguez sausage served in pita sandwiches, plates, or salads. Meats are either grilled over charcoal or roasted on a rotating spit, resulting in smoky, profound flavors that come through regardless of the carb or vegetable vehicle. Seasoned sides like crispy croccolo, oyster mushrooms, and shawarma-spiced cauliflower add heft, even if the generously portioned dishes don’t need them. Thanks to Elmaleh’s experience with high-volume, everything works well delivered or taken away. Mizlala also operates daily in West Adams and along Hollywood’s Sycamore Avenue.
