"I learned that Jeff Goldblum visited the California state capitol to support two identical bills — Assembly Bill 1080 (from San Diego Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez) and Senate Bill 54 (from Santa Monica Senator Ben Allen) — aimed at cutting single-use plastic consumption by 75 percent within the next decade by restricting non-reusable plastics in restaurants and cafes. He spoke with lawmakers and representatives of Governor Gavin Newsom’s office about reviving the measures, which were tabled in September after heavy opposition from industry groups despite being expected to face a vote last fall. During his presentation he delivered an extremely Goldblum-sounding pitch, praising various sizes of reusable straws, brandishing a wide metal straw for “thick, thick slurpy smoothie” and a thinner one for “more liquidy water, or lemonade,” and saying, “This is the last straw you’ll need to have for the rest of your days.”" - Eve Batey
