"Retro tiles and glasses of Spanish Xarello provide a refuge on Via Melzo, a street full of trendy openings and rowdy university students on a night out. From the team behind Trippa (the most coveted dinner reservation in town), Osteria Alla Concorrenza has all the spirit of a classic osteria folded into Milan’s modern wine scene. A dozen or so wines are scribbled on a chalkboard, but the cellar has a full selection of natural and small-producer wines from Italy, Spain, and France. There are a ton of bites, like focaccia sandwiches and crostoni, but the best option is a pre-dinner snack of tagliere misto plus an order of giardiniera. It’s the kind of place you drop in for one glass and end up staying for a few more after meeting locals." - Margaret Ross
